McCarthy's Focus on Town's Future
Saturday, 1st Dec 2012 07:49

Manager Mick McCarthy says that while he is respectful of the club’s history, it’s Town’s future which is most important to him, and he believes to supporters.

He says there is great potential at Town and he aims to take the club forward: “I wouldn’t have come [here if there wasn’t]. But with deference and with respect to the past, what people are interested in is the future. That has got to be what is important at the moment.

“I know the past, I know the history, not all of it, of course, but I’m aware of it,” he added. “But what we’re interested in is the future of the football club, that’s what’s important.”

McCarthy is pleased to see figures from Town’s history still in and around the club but wants people to be talking about current as well as past successes: “I know a lot of the lads. Mick Mills I see, Charlie Woods comes in, I was a friend of Sir Bobby’s. Warky comes into the place, Steve McCall’s in the place and I love the fact that they come in and I embrace all that and they’re always welcome.

“But nobody really talks about me at Man City or at Celtic when they beat Barcelona the other day. Nobody’s really bothered about that, nobody talks about me in Lyon when I played, nobody talks about me with the Republic of Ireland if they get to the World Cup quarter-finals again.

“It all gets, not forgotten as such, but people enjoy the moment, and it’s there to be enjoyed. We look back and enjoy the fact that we’ve got a good history, everywhere I’ve been, but they’re bothered about last Saturday, that’s what people are bothered about, and next Saturday.”

We have a past to be proud of. MM is absolutely right though, we need to start building a team which can make some history of it's own! Would love to see MM build a team with a mix of youthful home grown talent (Hyam/Smith) and shrewd additions (a la Matt Holland) that can stick together and improve. I believe MM is the man to oversee such a project and feel optimistic with this guy at the helm! COYB

There have been some very dark days over the past 2 or 3 years , made worse for remembering this club in its glory days , it would be nice to think we can put that behind us now and finally move on to creating something to be proud of here and now and i do think McCarthy , unlike the 2 previous managers has the charisma and ability to bring us back.

This is the right way we need to be thinking!

@algarve- nice idea but I think the 'TAT' part might backfire on us somewhere along the line!

Sounds like MM is here for the long haul then. This is a club that has the facilities and set up to be a week established top flight team; it jars me off to see the likes of Stoke, Blackpool, Burnley etc.. who have been promoted in recent years.

Couldn't agree more Mick! We need to create more history rather than dwell on previous success and hopefully Mick's the man to bring a smile back to Portman Road!!

Very true Mick but I know a lot of Irish fans who still talk about you in massive regard who are now following or progress with great interest. I honestly believe that by the new year we will of met out target this year and be safe, Then we can get on with building for next year although a push for the play offs is still now an impossibility even if unlikely.

I believe in Mic McCarthy. He has worked at the top level of football for years. He doesn't chase big name players, he grows players into a team. We seem a good fit for each other, Ipswich and Mick. There may be legends floating about the club but Mick wants to make forward progress. COYB

Mick McCarthy is clearly the wisest and best manager that Ipswich Town has had for many a long year. Yes. It has to be about the future. I realise that most of my postings/messages have referred to the past. I'm stopping that right away. And another thought. Not much from Mr Clegg since MM has been here. Reason? He hasn't had to say much. He hasn't had to be 'minding' the likes of R. Keane and P. Jewell.

Make the future sweet and we don't have to cling on to the past. Over to you Mick, you are the man in play.. and seem to have half an idea, keep this ratio up and maybe we get promoted with the worst goal difference EVER!

Mick i see where your coming from about the future but the past at ipswich town will allways be remembered and talked about.
My grandfathers watched town for years when they were alive and when i was a little boy my father took me regular to watch town play and i remember watching players like Ray Crawford and Ted Phillips breaking the nets with the old leather balls and one of our great managers Alf Ramsey leave town and go on to be a great England Manager.
I took my own children to see the great Bobby Robsons team he built at Ipwich every week and watched them beat the great arsenal side and win the FA Cup
and beat Barcerlona three nil and win a top european cup and finish runners up in the top English league.
My own children are all growing up now and have kids of their own but the only past they can talk about is how Managers like Roy Keane and Paul Jewell have ruined our team and we now have a decent manager here now hopefully will build us a great team again and put Ipswich Town back on the map.
You are our future now Mick and make us great again and town fans will talk about you for years to come.

TATD - seem to remember that from somewhere? Didn't this site change its name to exactly that when GB got us into the Premiership ( or am I the only one sad enough to have been reading it that long??!)
