JET: Three Contenders for Player of the Year
Wednesday, 10th Apr 2013 06:00

Town supporters, who will soon be casting their votes in the annual Player of the Year poll, have been told by Jay Emmanuel-Thomas who he considers to be the leading candidates.

Emmanuel-Thomas, unlikely to be in contention himself after missing so much first team action in the current campaign, said: “I think the two Lukes, Chambers and Hyam, have had really good seasons.

“Luke H does his job consistently and Tommy [Smith] has also had a really good season. But I think a lot of the players have had good, positive seasons.

“We’ve had a lot of 1-0 wins and if it only takes one goal to win a game you can’t really complain, but if we got a few more goals it would make life a bit easier for the defenders.

“Every team makes at least one mistake in a game. At Millwall there was a situation when Luke Chambers missed the ball and [Jermaine] Easter went through.

“Thankfully he missed but at times like that your head is your hands and you are thinking ‘What’s going to happen now?’. There’s no doubt that defensively we have been strong since Mick McCarthy came in and got us better organised.

“That’s why I think the supporters will go for one of the two Lukes or Tommy as their main man.”

Speaking at Monday’s Supporters Club event at Brantham, Tommy Smith and skipper Carlos Edwards were in agreement. Smith said his vote would go to either his central defensive partner Chambers or Hyam, while Edwards said he would pick the young midfielder.

It's definitely the big man from New Zealand for me. In my opinion, nobody has improved as much as Tommy Smith. I remember seeing him in either our 1st or 2nd home game of last season against Hull. I believe we lost 1-0 because Tommy was very shaky and was turned very easily which allowed Matty Fryatt a 1-on-1, which he scored with ease. He was left out and when he made an appearance, he never looked very comfortable.

However, since the start of this season, he has gone from strength to strength and has become an absolute solid rock at the back. His New Zealand experience must have boosted his confidence no end and with Chambers (who has also been great, especially recently) has formed a great partnership.

My vote will go to Smith after a dodgy start , think Stearman the best right back we have had for awhile

Tommy smith !!!! No contest
As for people saying hyam , i have no problem with him , capable cdm at this level , but I ask myself , if he was from Blackburn and we had signed him on a free would you all mention him ? Huge amounts of bias towards like hyam as he's from
Ipswich ! Hugely overrated yet still capable !

Player of the year is boring. 'Dissapointment of the Year' is far more interesting.

My Shortlist would be: JET, Chopra & Carson

JET: Bags of talent but no signs of him getting his head screwed on.
Chopra: After all the hype last summer of aiming for 20 goals etc and his off-field antics have made him a liability.
Carson: Really want him to do well but another season on the fringes without signs of improvement.

Maybe a bit harsh to name these 3. There are worse players in the squad from a technical point of view but I am only going on the dissapointment factor. For example, Kisnorbo - didnt expect much in the first place

Got to be Tommy. Like Luke but if he continues to progress see him in running next year. With all our loans shouldn't we have a 'loan player of the year' award as well? Wouldn't be tempted to vote for NRC but DJ definitely brought a smile to my face. Maybe we should also have a 'loan player of the year who didn't play' award as well. Hopefully if ME supports MM the way CE says he wants to (god I love acronyms!) then that award will become redundant.

Really looking forward to Hull and CP game. If we pick up all the points and the other results go in our favour we could be up to 12th - Get the oxygen ready!!

Tommy Smith for me
If we can keep this 4 4 next season we could have best defence in Championship.
Also Smith or Chambers for captain

I believe we have the best defence in the Championship already. Smith can now depend upon the other three in the back line as they can each other.

It's generally agreed that we need more penetration from the attacking midfielders - ones with some vision. Hopefully Wordsworth will grow into one of those?

Smith. Transformed by MM and TC into a very good player - much to my surprise I must say.

I think that Smith will win Player of the Year but as it is POY my vote would go to Chambers as he has been an almost everpresent this season.
