McCarthy Pulled Plug on Deadline Day Deal
Saturday, 1st Feb 2014 18:13

Town boss Mick McCarthy has revealed he pulled the plug on the deal he was hoping to complete before last night’s 11pm deadline with Leeds midfielder Paul Green understood to have been the target.

“It was just getting silly in terms of the amount of money they wanted for the wages,” McCarthy said.

“In the end I said ‘no, let him stay up there and sit in the stand and watch it, let them keep paying him, I’m not bothered’.”

McCarthy, who said he didn’t speak to the player himself, says he’ll look at bringing in another player next week: “The [emergency loan] window opens on Saturday and 93 days covers the rest of the season. Why break your heart?

“I said to club secretary Sally Webb go home, I don’t keep you at work. I’m not going to answer my phone any more.”

93days won't cover the rest of the season if we make the play offs!

Nice to hear a manager saying the same thing we all often feel about players who are happy to sit on their fat proverbials not doing anything to earn their inflated wage packets, or teams who permit the same misuse of their funds. I say good on you, Mick.

Here's hoping we can get someone in with the right attitude once the loan window opens.

agreed Mick made his own decision but to be fair to the player didn't Mick say it was the club who were asking too much for wages not the player in Loan deal situations??

From MM's comments i'm guessing the player wasn't Paul Green. I'm sure Town could afford a player like Green's wages. Sounds more like a player on prem wages like Jamie O'Hara at Wolves!

It would probably have been the fee Leeds commanded for the loan that put MM off as well as percentage of wage to be paid by us. I personally thinks its a lucky escape. Green was very good 5/6 years ago but certainly not the player he was. Mick does seem to like the experienced players though so can't really argue with his choice of player to date.

Brilliant news, if you ask me. I respect that we need a CM replacement due to injuries and losing Tunnicliffe, but I don't think Green was ever the right man. I think we're crying out for creativity and hopefully Mick will address this.

Jolly good show!!! Too similar to skuse and hyam, and the 2 of them are mighty similar as it is. Def not a disaster and means we will have to look elsewhere, Dorrans or o'hara. Or did dorrans go middlesborough??

It wasn't Green, completely different set of circumstances at Leeds, they had no manager!!!! As we all know, no one knows who MM is on about until it happens.

Well done Mick, don't pay over the odds for anyone. Especially if it was Green!

Is this what we have come to, trying to sign a player who would struggle to get a game for Bury Town. Still, I suppose he would have fitted in well with Nouble

We could always player one of own creative players in the middle. Im not sure when Mick will decide to give Taylor a run in the side, but he needs to give it some serious thought. Taylor is a match winner and gets in the face of defenders.

C'mon Mick give him a chance.

Jimmy86 completely agree, i think maybe not O'Hara but someone like Dorrans is just what we need, someone who can put defenders on the back foot!! And no his deal didn't go through at Middlesbrough.

Jimmy the deal for dorrans fell through. He would be a great signing. I remember when WBA were in the championship, dominated games on his own.
