Linked Duo Set to Leave Yeovil
Thursday, 15th May 2014 10:26

Yeovil manager Gary Johnson says he expects reported Town targets Luke Ayling and Byron Webster (pictured) to leave Huish Park this summer.

Right-back Ayling, who is said to be interesting the Blues and newly-promoted Brentford, and centre-half Webster, who has been linked with Town and Leeds, are out of contract at the end of June.

Johnson says that although the duo are amongst a number of players in the same position to have been offered new deals, he anticipates that they’ll move on.

“That doesn't mean that they will sign,” he told the BBC. “And they probably won't because I think they're possibly looking for pastures new, but we've made them a written offer anyway and we'll keep our fingers crossed and see what comes back.”

While Webster, 27, is available for free as Ayling is only 22 the former Arsenal youngster would be subject to compensation.

Keeper Marek Stech, who had a trial with Town back in 2011, has already confirmed that he won’t be staying with Yeovil, who were relegated back to League One after a single season in the Championship.

Elsewhere, former Blues loanee Tyrone Barnett has been made available for transfer by League One Peterborough with a year of his contract left to run.

Town boss Mick McCarthy made an enquiry regarding the 28-year-old in January but a deal was already in place for the former Crawley Town man to move to Bristol City on loan with a view to a permanent switch.

The Robins are yet to decide whether to take up that option with Barnett having made seven starts and 10 sub appearances, scoring once, as they avoided relegation from League One.

McCarthy may be keen to renew his pursuit of the striker, whose spell with the Blues in 2012 was limited to two starts and one sub appearance after he suffered a knee ligament injury.

There may be the potential for a swap deal with Posh perhaps similarly interested in re-signing their former frontman Paul Taylor, who Town have made available for transfer and who spent time back at London Road on loan during 2012/13.

Meanwhile, second-choice Blues left-back Tyrone Mings, who will spend time on a Michael Johnson Performance course at St George’s Park this summer, has said he would be up for a short-term loan if he is still finds himself behind Aaron Cresswell when the new season starts.

First-choice left-back Cresswell, 24, continues to be linked with a close season move away from Portman Road.

FIts MM's profile. He was a vulture circling Bristol City's carcass last summer, so wouldn't be surprised if one or more of this lot come in. Perhaps MM likes the west country accent? If anything does happen it will be tied up before we know anything about it. Unlike the Jewell days.

Taylor for Barnett? Not sure who else will be interested in Taylor and i quite liked Barnett when he was here previously.

Spot on Jimmyjuan. I'm not a fan of the style of football Mick has been serving up but his transfer dealings have been excellent in both selection of players and the discreet way they have been mostly kept under wraps until done.

Byron Webster was sent off twice last season. He was also the key CB in a team that conceded 75 goals during the campaign for Yeovil. Don't know if this is the right way forward?

Being in a relegated team doesn't make you a bad defender. Just look at Mcauley, Stearman, Berra etc.

Also, Mick has shown that with the right coaching you can make a leaky defence a good one without changing personnel (as he showed in his first season)

It's sad to see us picking the bones of relegated clubs but Mick did OK last year and lets be honest that's all we're going to attract, perhaps Finidi George is available on a free!!

I hear Finidi George is only 28 despite the press claiming he's just hit 50. Worth a punt?!

Swap Taylor for Assombalonga would be a great deal.. Bring it on!

A centre half? Really? Another? Why would we need Webster if we signed Ayling? It would free up Chambers.

We need strength in depth Keanish!

From what I've seen of Ayling he looks promising, however I know nothing about Webster, what's he like?

Ayling is quality, would be a great capture.

Definitely don't want Tyrone Barnett! A striker in a similar mould to Nouble that a league 1 team doesn't want?

We don't need a striker with Dids, Murphy, Nouble, Marriot... I'd only want another striker if he was absolute mustard to go alongside Dids.

I like the sound of Ayling, but is Hewitt going to get a chance at Town next season? Only time will tell...

Suspect it is an either/or for these Yeovil boys, gotta say prefer the idea of Ayling, but is Chambo really gonna hang around if he is not first choice?
Agree with Barnett being a no no, he is poor, Assambalonga however........

Ipswich_Loyal. - Hewitt has been playing right midfield for Gillingham - we might see him on the right wing with Ayling behind and maybe swapping often.

I've been told that Ipswich are one of a number of teams who have been scouting Matt Grimes at Exeter.

He would be an excellent signing, the boy is quality. He needs to add goals to his game and then he'd be a top player.

Barnett for Taylor, that has to be a joke as I thought the JET/Anderson swap was a joke until I found it was true. Anderson has been pretty crap but MM loves him & thinks he's been great, well he has to defend his players I suppose but do we really need any more dross. Can't see Ipswich playing anything apart from hoofball for the foreseeable future.

Matt Grimes eh, another midfielder that doesn't score goals, no brainer sign him up.

Assambalonga would cost a fortune, which we don't have. We won't recoup enough on Taylor to buy anybody decent so Barnett might be likely.
Either that or someone reaching the end of their contract......

Swapping Taylor for Tyrone Barnett is a depressing thought.

...It's because they're cheap to employ, right....? We've got nothing to shed out on transfer fees lets ALL be honest on that :( I trust Mick's judgement besides we signed Skuse and Anderson from a relegated club last season and look how they've turned out ;)
