Digby Wants to Stay With Town
Saturday, 23rd Apr 2016 19:21

Full league debutant Paul Digby says he’s told manager Mick McCarthy that he wants to remain with the Blues beyond his current loan from Barnsley, which runs until the end of the season.

McCarthy has previously said he’s like to keep the centre-half at Town, while the Blues are understood to have agreed with the Tykes when Digby joined on loan in January that the 21-year-old, who has a year left on his Oakwell contract, could move to Portman Road on a free transfer if he impressed during the spell.

“I’ve spoken to the gaffer and I want to stay here,” Digby told Ipswich Player HD after he made his first league start for the Blues in the 0-0 draw at Middlesbrough.

“I’m loving it. The boys are class, the staff are class and I’m really enjoying my time here so hopefully we can come to some sort of agreement.

“I’ve been working hard and the staff have been working me hard even when I’ve not been playing like doing things after training so I was delighted it paid off and I got my first start.”

Reflecting on the match, the Sheffield-born former England U19 and U20 international added: “It was a good game. It was a bit scrappy at times but we’ve done well to keep a clean sheet and come away with a point.

“I knew it would be a tough game but we all did well out there, we stuck together and stuck to the job at hand and come away with a point so I’m delighted.”

If you are a footballing midfielder you will regret it cause you will end up being a one dimensional hoof ball centre half in a one dimensional hoof ball team unless McCarthy moves on and a proper football coach comes in.

I wish him well. But we need to be planning for the future and frankly we need significant investment to buy quality. Digby is okay. We need better if we are to be serious contenders next season. My opinion.

He needs to be applauded for the work and effort he's put in for the team rather than damned with faint praise. Well done lad for your contribution towards achieving a hard fought draw. I hope you get a contract for next season.

He played well today. Quite how some have already made their judgement is beyond me.

My comments aren't directed at Digby I haven't seen him play they are based on what has been previously written about his favoured position and where his strength lays and what McCarthy will insist he does to stand a chance of getting into his team. He's not interested in footballers just players who run around alot. If Messi turned up and wanted a game he would play him wide right and expect him to cover the full back.

carsey.....it takes more than 'pretty football' to win the Championship. Now I'd be the first to admit that there is much to be done to improve our style of play, but the basics, the dirty work, have to be done first and relied upon. I like many others would love to see the return to attacking silky play, but that would require investment and Mick has not had that investment at all. Considering what he has had at his disposal I think he's done well and should be more appreciated. If you want us to play like Real Madrid every week, you could be on for a long wait. Players like Digby though are the real future and I wish him well.

I'm confused. People talk about lack of style but it seems we moved the ball about quite fluidly against Boro. It seems that now the play offs are out of reach MM is trying a more relaxed approach to playing style. It seems he actually prefers the passing game but doesn't feel he has the resources to compete against the rich clubs playing that way. But a lot of people have already come up with conclusions before the game and want their witch burning ceremony.

If you accept ME isn't going to throw another £20M into the pot,and you don't want journeymen ,freebies & loans, surely you have to accept the youth coming through may give ITFC the chance of challenging for promotion.Yes,it'll take longer, but MM has already stated that from next season, the youth will have to contribute like never before because emergency loans have been stopped. One question i keep asking but the MM detractors never reply,"If you were ME,owed around £80M by the club, would you throw more money in?".You only have to look at Bolton where the Chairman wrote off £170M+ with the club in freefall, desperate for a buyer and possibly going out of existence.ME,MM & TC have done well enough.

Gemini..the way i see it,ME bought that debt for a fraction of its worth and the club owe him the full amount to which they pay him back, Good piece of business that. So lets not put him on to high a pedestal. M.E see's us as a business in which if he was to think about it he could help us get promoted and the debt would get paid off, maybe he is happy just the way it is?

Not sure why no one you feel has answered your question, The answer is an emphatic yes! You compare us to the bolton chairman i compare us to the Middlesborough chairman, not as wealthy as Evans but a fan of the club and looks like they are going to get their rewards!

I know Simon Clegg was slated for the painting of the turnstyles, but has anyone else noted that certain areas of the ground are starting to look scruffy?

When Mick took over the republic h was criticised for trying to move away from Jack charltons long ball style. I think he's a pragmatist and knows with the cash he has, the only way we can compete is with a more pragmatic style. However when we had Fraser, AMN, Mcgoldrick etc all fit a the start of the season we were playing more. Give Mick the money most of the top six have and he'll buy players who are effective playing good football.

If he can pass a ball out of defence without hoofing it will be a good addition.

A player doesn't need to cost money to play the ball on the floor. Any Tom, Dick or Harry can pass it instead of lump it.

So we have a washed up stick it in reverse slow midfielder who decides to renew his contract and a division one player who couldn't get a game telling us he would love to stay - why wouldn't he ?
Sit in the stands at Barnsley or play in our first team
All due respect tof diggers but I am sure we may find a better solution this summer
But then again micks knows best
5 wins since Jan 01 and as he told us in Jan no one out there who could improve his lot

He's from Barnsley, so I expect he'll tick the right sort of boxes of being one of Mick's faves. They'll prob ship Tommy Smith out rather than give him a new contract and replace him with Digby. Anything to save a few hundred quid a week! Nothing surprises me at Ipswich any more! The club is stuck in neutral! We've been rotting in the Championship so long that our last Premiership footage was in 4:3 aspect ratio! Get in Martinez. Please save Ipswich from this Mick McCarthy ice age, he's turning Portman Road into Jurassic Park! The place is freezing over with boredom!!!

@algarve fan but you need to be able to play football the majority of the time and thats where our problem is we don't we do the ugly bit that you need sometimes all of the time we will never get out doing that

Who knows, Digby may turn out to be a good player. He did ok yesterday by all accounts. What we really need are 2 or 3 proper midfield players as opposed to hyam , douglas and skuse.

Dissboyitfc, whereas i respect your view,i'm glad you don't run my finances.Throw another £20M in the pot, with no guarantee of success? You're far braver than me,far more confident, far more assured,i never base anything on what i might gain,i base my expenditure on what i may lose.Advice published by one of the richest men in the world, great advice.I'd keep my £20M, whereas you'd spend it in the hope.

None of us know what Me has to spend. The Sunday Times table is basically what his assets are worth and not necessarily an indication of cash available. Many people are quite wealthy due to the value of their house. They don't necessarily have a fortune in realy money.

Anyway the problem is not necessarily the players but the style they are made to play.

Completely disagree that in order for us to play pretty football, significant investment needs to be made. Are you honestly telling me that Tommy Smith and the like aren't capable of passing the ball 10 yards? They are being TOLD to lob it up in the air, thats how MM plays and it doesnt matter who the 11 players are, the tactics will still be the same *in my opinion.

This may sound negative, but far from it. I just want the best for our Club and i do not think we are getting value for our hard earned money in entertainment. I mean, the poor fans who travelled to Middlesboro for a dead rubber and we play for a draw and have only one poor excuse for a shot in 90 mins. Not fair in my opinion.
