Town Agree Fee for Posh Winger Edwards
Friday, 13th Jul 2018 18:07

Town have agreed a fee with Peterborough United for winger Gwion Edwards.

The 25-year-old has been on the Blues’ radar since May when they were linked with the former Wales U21 international along with Nottingham Forest and Bristol City.

Last month Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony tweeted that Blues owner Marcus Evans had contacted the League One club’s director of football Barry Fry with Edwards widely believed to be the reason for that call.

Earlier this afternoon MacAnthony revealed that the former Swansea and Crawley man had set his heart on a move to a Championship club, who we can confirm are Town.

The precise fee is currently unconfirmed but is understood to be a significant sum with Edwards's former club Crawley set to receive a six-figure sell-on from the deal agreed when he joined Posh in 2016.

Talks regarding personal terms are set to take place over the next few days with Edwards looking set to become new manager Paul Hurst’s third Blues signing.

I don't know anything about the lad, but at least we are signing players. Now please can we have a couple of centre-backs?

Great stuff. I've never seen him play but sounds like that Posh chairman really wanted to keep him. I wonder what sort of fee it is. Peterborough don't usually sell on the cheap. As long as he's not another Paul Taylor I'm happy!

Beating a few decent and active clubs If we sign him

Hope we still go in for McKay at Forest. That link has gone quiet. We supposedly made a firm enquiry with Forest for him, but not heard anything since. Can't be that much as forest want did.

He will be a terrific signing (fingers/toes crossed) the Peterborough owner doesn't normally get it wrong when saying he loves a player, he has been raving about him all summer thinking he was staying, if we can complete the signing it shows real intend & would give us a quality left winger: I was v impressed by him, when watching Peterborough game with Blackburn last season on Sky:

Another pot luck player. When are the players who play in the positions we need to fill going to be signed? We are looking to be short of defenders to fill the gaps left by the sale of Webster and the loss of carter-vickers. Beginning to look as though it will be a case of we are going to try to score goals and hope the opposition are not capable of scoring more .

Just been picking a Posh ST holder on Edwards via twitter by Mullet 13 Jul 2018 18:35
Very mixed news for us.

"When he’s not injured, he’s a terrific player. Skilful, passionate and works hard. But very injury prone. And normally lengthy ones too.

He seems to get injured easily, and not normally in the tackle. Definitely good enough for championship, if he stays fit, he can really progress. Sad to see him leave.

He can play both wings. Scores special goals too, doesn’t do tap ins. Very attack minded."

Sounds exactly like the type of player Hurst has targeted throughout his career and makes me think if we get the very similar McKay then Rowe and/or Ward might be moved on sooner rather than later. (I'd keep Ward but no idea how he fits into our wage structure).

Also makes me wonder where McKendry fits in in the bigger picture.

Skip to 1 minute mark and he has 2/10 GOTS contenders for Posh and wins it. Can clear strike a ball well, loves a shot and hasn't really done much but progress looking at his St Johnstone stuff too.

Also ties in with something I've noticed about Hurst's recruitment in that all of the players are very similar/identical in many respects. He doesn't seem to go for or replace players in areas that aren't very similar in approach and style.

Very curious and excited to see someone who clearly feels they're ready come here and prove it.

Forgot to add the most recent season's countdown and his run and finish against Northampton is just as good as anything else.

Stand out performer the season before last then spent most of the time injured from what I heard. With our history I hear "injury" and alarm bells ring, probably unfairly but we will see.

One might argue we need wingers too Meek? Yes we need defenders but also wingers, given the manager clearly likes to play with width

Friend of mine is a Posh fan and is totally gutted. Best player there last season. In his words we gave signed a gem of a player.

One of a string of talented players to come out of posh. Along with Maddison (who would be out of our budget). Great signing. Now for a centre back N'siala please!

Another led balloon but I SERIOUSLY prefer the days of NO leaks and a player being signed.

While I love nothing more than knowing the goings on at ITFC, I'm never sure leaked information is particularly benefical.

Had enough of it with Jewell / Magilton + Keane........ then funnily enough more often than not the player didn't sign..........

Again, as was with Roberts, his wikipedia page already says Ipswich Town. It was true for Roberts so hopefully it will again be true.
Now as Jimmy86 has said, get McKay from Forest and we're all set regarding wingers. Would like to see Tilt join us as well.

All the moaners moaning about Marcus's recruitment of a new manager. He then signs his No.1 target. excellent work.

An article commented that he had been picking the brains of Barry Fry about players and once again the moaners whine about him. Cleary he had his target again.

Just off to finish my glass (its half full) of cider. Leave some of you to finish your half empty ones.

Just don't like leaks Rocky. Never does anyone any good.

Whether people liked or hated Mick, we knew nothing then boom - deal.

Better than reading this / that about x y z. Until it's a done deal...........

You can have as many wingers as you like but you must first have a defence to support them ! No point playing with six wingers if you cannot defend . Appears to me ward and Rowe are on the way out and being replaced by any pot luck players thought to have been suitable for Shrewsbury Town!

@meekreech
What exactly makes a pot luck signing? Signing a player from Macclesfield? From Spurs reserves?

All players, to a certain extent, are a gamble - but let's give the new manager the benefit.

Last season the defence gave away some silly goals so I think Hurst will also be looking at defenders

I work with a St Johnstone fan & when he was there he started off on the wing, they then gave him the number 10 shirt & he played behind the strikers, he said he was outstanding! Sounds a good bit of business, hopefully some more new faces in next week, hoping Tilt is one of them & Bart to sign a new contract. COYB
