Hurst: Adeyemi Will Have to Grit his Teeth and Get on With It
Thursday, 26th Jul 2018 16:30

Blues boss Paul Hurst says midfielder Tom Adeyemi will have to “grit his teeth” and get back to training as he believes the 26-year-old is in danger of having another injury-hit campaign.

Adeyemi, who joined the Blues last summer after being released by Cardiff following a successful season on loan at Rotherham, made only four starts and one sub appearance last season with illness and injury hampering him in pre-season and at the start of a campaign before a recurring hamstring problem saw his 2017/18 end in October.

The former Norwich youngster was back in training at the start of pre-season and played in the friendly against Kilmarnock in Spain but hasn't featured since.

“It’s an achilles,” Hurst said, explaining that the current injury isn’t related to last year’s long-term problem.

“Tom, because I think he’s had so many injuries, he finds it difficult to get back out there and as far as I’m concerned it’s getting to a point where he’s going to have to grit his teeth and get on with it.

“As harsh as that may sound, he’s at risk of just having another season already of not playing enough football and he’s missed far too much already. Hopefully we can get him back out there and he can stay fit.”

Does he believe the injuries have made Adeyemi over-cautious and wary of returning to training too quickly and exacerbating the problem? “There’s obviously something there, but at the end of the day there’s another player in the squad that’s got something very similar who has trained every day, so I want him to get out there.

“We all have different pain thresholds, I understand that, but I’m wanting people that I can rely on, that we’re going to go to war with.

“When he first dropped out my understanding was that he was just going to miss a couple of days but I haven’t seen him back out on the training pitch yet. I’m wanting to get him back out there if he’s going to be part of the plans.”

Asked whether the physios have said Adeyemi’s all right to get back out there, Hurst added: “Almost, but like I say it’s difficult because they’re not feeling that pain. But, at the same time, like I say, we’ve got a player with a very similar issue and hasn’t missed a day’s training.”

Great stuff by Hurst. He says it how it is and we've all been saying the same thing on here. We don't have the money or patience to waste on sick notes anymore. I really like how no nonsense he is. We've had far too many precious players who need pampering and are constantly injured. If you're not going to contribute then get lost!

Don't sit on the fence Mr Hurst - tell us what you really think!

In fairness he has suffered a lot of injuries lately and he must be worried of yet another injury. It's all well and good saying ‘shape up' but not being involved for so long creates worry.

Hope he gets a the necessary support both mental and medical.

This attitude isnt going to help Mr Hurst in the long run. Players wont like it, and they stick together, this could become sticky if the manager doesnt button it in public. In private, yes, tell them how it is, but dont plaster it all over the press, they love a story to add fuel to the fire with.

Diplomatic but clear and firm ; this is objective and instructive -- lets hope someone can get this young man out there performing ; he showed the most enormous promise and appeared Spring heeled early last season ; i'd love to see that from him again & I guess lots of others would too !
BUT what is stopping him from appearing ?
We certainly shouldn't keep paying for non performers, but it appears to be a carrot & stick case .
We're all behind PH on this one .

I get the impression that Tom has had physical injuries but also is perhaps suffering from depression and hence has struggled to get back to fitness mentally & physically

Crazy rather than spend all your time on here why not spend your time asking Delia where approx 15 mil or Murphy/Maddison money has gone?

Starting to think Adeyemi is a scum plant and you're his agent

Only doesn't work if the manager is a poo. Hurst I feel has goodness in abundance

Hope he is okay either way & gets back out on the pitch - as he looked like a great player - what little we saw of him at least!

Shame, could have been a great player for us. I think he'll be injured most of the season again and leave on a free next summer.

I really like the attitude coming from Hurst which is sending a few well needed shockwaves through the squad and their fitness levels will have improved instead of being cuddled for the last few seasons which i'm sure resulted in a lot of injuries as the players were not fit enough, go to it Paul onwards and upwards.

Absolutely love this from the new manager, we have had enough dead wood clogging up the treatment room taking home money that could get better players to this club. Spot on mr hurst!

The likes of mcgoldrick, huws, Bishop, Hyam, adeyemi last season not what we need going forwards. Step up and prove yourselves.

Am very worried Hurst is way out of his depth, with all his "threats here, threats there". He should keep all these thoughts and conversations to himself. Current players won't like it, nor potential players he wants to bring in.

He's playing to the fans nicely, but comes across as one dimensional and far too public in how he's dealing with individuals.

Who is Tom Adeyemi!?!...does he play for us?

Hurst comes across as a thoroughly decent bloke and I am sure he will know when an arm around the shoulder is needed as opposed to some harsh reality.

Seems it all got a bit too easy at Ipswich for a few and change was desperately needed. I for one am loving the honesty from our new boss.

All this nonsense about players sticking together and won't get behind PH - if any of you were ever part of a team, you'd probably know that players do stick together but those who play, those that sit around and take money are not that a big part of the group. How do you think Chambers or Garner who play with like broken ribs and skulls feel about a player like Adeyemi?

therein61 added 18:07 - Jul 26
Hurst is talking common sense not making threats, he expects players to be fit and ready to perform taking the club forward instead of playing shoe ins when better players were fit as was the case until now.

I got shot down for saying this previously, but I stand by my comments: this fella was a complete waste of time. Really poor signing. It's beyond me why we'd sign players like this and Huws - who had injuries whilst on loan.

Hurst is completely correct. I like him more and more by the day.
