Ripley: We Have to Be Horrible to Play Against
Thursday, 6th Oct 2022 11:26

Morecambe keeper Connor Ripley says League One’s bottom side have to be “horrible to play against” when the Blues visit the Mazuma Stadium on Saturday.

The second-placed Blues travel to the Fylde coast looking to build on the back-to-back home wins over Portsmouth and Cambridge with more than 1,000 fans making the trip with tickets still on sale and pay on the day available at the ground with no price increase.

Town were given a tough game by the Shrimps in last season’s corresponding fixture in February, the Blues dominating throughout but being restricted to a 1-1 draw, Wes Burns netting an equaliser with four minutes remaining (pictured above) after Aaron Wildig had given the home side the lead on 59.

Ripley, 29, was speaking following last week’s 3-1 local derby defeat away against Accrington Stanley.

“We’ve got Ipswich at home and I was saying to the boys in there, dust yourselves off, it is done, it’s done, we can’t change the outcome, when Ipswich come to the Mazuma, we have to be brutal,” he told his club’s official website.

“We have to be horrible to play against, people can take it however they want but I know what I’m going to do to win a game of football.

“It’s up to them now, it’s up to the boys out on the pitch to be as nasty and horrible to win a game.”

Morecambe are yet to win at home in the league this season having drawn two and lost three.

Understandable comments considering where they are in the league and their desperation for points. But I can't help but think that it's a bit foolish to make such comments public as it'll simply prepare further our need to be patient and calm on the ball.

Maybe they should see how that worked out for Cambridge on tuesday

Why not try to play football and show us what you can't do? Lol!

Churchman added 12:02 - Oct 6
They don't sound very confident

Being tough is one thing, nasty another. Lets hope the ref does his job then and protect our players from serious injuries.

Let's just get out of this league and sharpish!

I meant division not league!

Last season they took the lead against the run of play (ending our series of clean sheets in the process) and then sat back and invited us to break them down. If they go behind early on and are forced to come out and play, there could be carnage.

Agree, the key is scoring early. If we do that, we coast to victory. The longer the match goes on without us scoring (or gawd forbid if they score) and the match will become tough.

I'm sure KM and Co will already have a strategy and tactics formulated for the'awkward' squad ; patience ,character and energetic application linked to the intense focus present almost throughout Tuesday's game ought to see a convincing result for ITFC .
Our team will have been collectively and individually briefed on Morecambe and their attitude and vulnerabilities !
SO COYB – wrap it up !!

5.0 away win

They are a poor team and comments like that are from a manager that expects to get walloped and they will . 4-0 town win.

Barty added 12:56 - Oct 6
Sorry - should have read player [ not manager ]

I think it's their goalkeeper's comments, not their manager.

We've got a Morsy

TBinHK has it nailed, early goal and the pick them off. Suspect this might be one where jackson starts and stretches in behind like he did at Accrington

These comments are unacceptable and likely to encourage the type of behaviour or challenges that could seriously injure Town players. I have reported Ripley's comments to the EFL and asked them to investigate

Nobbysnuts added 14:34 - Oct 6
Dirty, cheating, time wasting w#nkers in other way they are going to play football.

Nobbysnuts added 14:38 - Oct 6
Those comments can't be legal can they? Surely that's bringing the game into disrepute????

JewellintheTown added 14:46 - Oct 6
Hopefully the ref will be made aware of those comments and after a couple of red cards, we'll take them to the cleaners.

More likely they just try to wind up Morsy and get him sent off....

Carberry added 15:58 - Oct 6
Both Morsy and Evans need to make sure they aren't wound up and get yellows or reds. So poor when players come out with comments like this, we've moved on from the 1970s. May the full force of the EFL fall upon him, with those comments likely to bring the game into disrepute.

When we were in the Prem in 2001, and they were in the Vanarama (shows how things change) we won 3-0 and I think many of us had a soft spot for them, but with comments like that, it is time to put them back in their place and send them back toward non-league, while we stride back to the promised land. I smell another 3 goal victory

Whatever you make of his comments, this keeper is talented.
