Town Agree Goalkeeper Data Partnership Wednesday, 25th Sep 2024 11:55 Town have signed a multi-year agreement with Goalkeeper.com, keeper data intelligence specialists who assisted the club in the recruitment of Aro Muric from Burnley in the summer.
The Blues signed the Kosovan international from the Clarets for £10 million during the transfer window with Goalkeeper.com playing a role in identifying the 25-year-old as a target.
A press release reads: “Goalkeeper.com intelligence services elite-level football clubs and organisations, using a forensic approach to support goalkeeper recruitment, performance, and development.
“Led by Dr John Harrison PhD, Goalkeeper.com’s data team worked with head of goalkeeping Rene Gilmartin and the recruitment team to identify a goalkeeper best suited to Ipswich’s style of play and the situations they most frequently face.”
Now the two parties have agreed a longer-term arrangement with Town having access to the Goalkeeper.com performance suite for the 2024/25 and 2025/26 seasons, as well as continued ongoing support.
“Goalkeeper.com data is going to help us make more educated and informed decisions, especially at elite professional level,” Gilmartin said.
“There’s going to be money involved at this level. There's going to be investment involved. You want to have as much of the information and knowledge to hand to make big decisions. That’s what Goalkeeper.com gave us.”

"Dr John Harrison PhD"! Never trust anyone who uses both "Dr" and "PhD" in referring to themselves! (I wonder what his PhD is in...) (Wait, hold on—wasn't that the name of Benedict Cumberbatch's character in Star Trek Into Darkness?? KHHAAAANNNNNNNNNN!)

I know Muric makes the odd calamity error, but if you look past those and analyse the data, I remember reading that his actual goals conceeded is lower than his expected goals conceeded, and by a decent margin too - ie he actually makes saves he has no right to make. I can absolutely see why we used this data to sign him. Was such a shame he had a bit of a mare in his first game as that just gave ammo to the numbskulls who only ever remember bad performances and take no notice of everything good he's done. Again, testament to the data approach and consideration we now take with all our new signings. I think he's going to be a really valuable asset this season if we stand any chance of staying up.

His shot stopping is not in doubt as he has proved already. What is a concern is his passing under pressure. We are a team that play it out from the back and he does look a bit shakey or is without confidence in his own ability to play that way. I am a bit of a sceptic with him, but his shot stopping in the last few games has been impressive. They say keepers generally get better towards their 30’s, so am guessing we should be looking at an evolved player in time.

Utter Tosh Clough didn't need to sign Shilton Or Arsenal to sign Jennings. If watching games you can't spot a good keeper Jesus. Money money money.

I would love the club to invest in building their own platform. Ultimately, this is about competitive advantage over other clubs, and if we don't own the IP, then we will always be reliant on using other 'platforms'. Tony Bloom has his own Data scientists working in London on their platform, it's that not hard. There are a ton of open source data feeds available, AWS, S3, Chat-GPT, Knowledge graph, LLM, augmentation. I am sure there are quite a few town fans that would like to help too. We could then decide who to sell the insights / intelligence too, maybe other clubs abroad etc who we don't have a conflict of interest with.

Victorysquad: Yes me too. Access to widely available data sites is all well and good, except that everyone is getting exactly the same information, though of course it could be interpreted differently by different people, given the human element involved. Rather like VAR, which often comes down to human interpretation, and as we all know, humans naturally make mistakes.

Medical Drs are not PhD's, in fact medical 'Doctors' are not doctors at all, they are physicians.

I miss the days of the kit man hoofing balls at the keepers as their training regimen.
