Sheffield United Eyeing Woolfenden
Tuesday, 7th Jan 2025 20:25

TWTD understands Sheffield United have renewed their interest in Blues central defender Luke Woolfenden.

The Blades were previously keen on Woolfenden in January 2020 during manager Chris Wilder’s first spell at Bramall Lane in the Premier League, but with the Blues making it clear he wasn’t for sale.

The 26-year-old, a key man in the back-to-back promotion side, has returned to the Town team for the last three matches having been out of favour for much of the first half of the season following the signing of Dara O’Shea.

However, the Blues added another defender, Ben Godfrey, to their squad on loan from Atalanta earlier in the week with the twice-capped-England international able to play either right-back or right centre-half, much like Axel Tuanzebe, who is closing in on a return from his hamstring injury.

We understand the Championship’s third-placed side are yet to make an approach and it remains to be seen whether the Blues would consider either a permanent or loan offer for the academy product, who is contracted until this summer but with the club believed to have an option for an additional season.

I thought he did well in the last few games, would be surprised to see him go, and a little disappointed. I confess I didn't think he was up to the PL level at the start of the season, but he's clearly worked hard and improved.

Not sure how I’d feel about him leaving, especially this window.

Feel like he’s really stepped up in the last couple of games and hasn’t looked out of place in the prem, but as the article says is Godfrey gonna be above him as he’s a CB?

Certainly from a sentimental point of view I’d be sad to see him leave….

Under rated player in my opinion and a local link, don't see any value in selling him unless he wants to move.

This would break my heart. It’s been so good seeing him back in the team recently and he’s fully deserved to keep his place. Adds a calmness and assurance that we miss when he’s not there. ITFC through and through.

Woolfy, Burns and Luongo are just some of those that need to move on so we can make space for players of better quality. The quad needs improving if we are to survive the relegation battle this season

In my view the best ball playing centre back we have I would keep .

I’m 50/50 on this. Most of the players who have stepped up to this level haven’t really had enough time to prove either way if they are good enough or if they will continue to improve… add the sentimental angle and I’d say we should keep hold of him..

Am I right in thinking that this will help with our FFP as he is a local lad coming through the youth system ?

Was told last week that he wants to leave the club to get regular games. Wouldn't surprise me if this is why we've signed on loan initially, Ben Godfrey.

Surely we have to expect Axel to be out again during second half of season. If Godfrey takes his place that would leave us short.

Just because Sheff Utd are “eyeing” him, doesn’t mean we’ll sell him. He has just got back in a team that has done well since he has come back into the side. No guarantee yet that Godfreybis any better.

Forward planning is everything ,and MA and KM know exactly what is needed !LW appears to have surprised many by his dedication and the improvements in his all round game .
We shall see !coyb

Mixed views but we have to let the coaches make the call. We do not want Luke to he unhappy. Can we extend and loan for now?

Doesn’t mean we would sell him, he has stepped up and looked really composed - wouldn’t want to see him go tbh , not enough cover especially with our injury record

He won’t go hope not!

Done well last few games local lad needed for the home grown player rules!

Sad if he dose go but with axel injured & Ben Godfrey playing RB luke will still be part of this team

I think this is rubbish story he will stay

Rangers also interested in him!
Homegrown players means UK not town or city when it comes to Prem.

Shame some heroes will go, would get decent fee for him, not sure why people think we be short we have loads defenders and Burgess was great in same position.
If Tinazabe got injured we have Godfrey and Johnson.
Rather one of our own didn't go.
Burns to Wrexham.

Not loving this news, but other teams will covet our players - doesn't mean that we are going to sell or loan them.

Wolfy is a valuable member of our squad - I'd be surprised - and disappointed - to see him leave.

I would like him to stay. playing 3 centre backs with O'shea centre and Godfrey right - he would be first choice replacement
McKenna will be a much different manager to Wilder.
