Woolfenden Signs New Deal
Friday, 31st Jan 2025 15:30

Centre-half Luke Woolfenden has signed a new two-and-a-half-year contract with the Blues, a deal which runs to the summer of 2027.

Academy product Woolfenden, 26, joined the club aged 11 and made his first-team debut in the Carabao Cup at Luton in August 2017.

If he stays with the Blues for the full extent of his new terms, the Chantry-raised defender will have been a senior player with his hometown club for 10 years.

“I think happy is probably the only word I can say. The club’s in the Premier League, so it made sense to sign a new deal,” he told TownTV.

“I think it’s not something I’d ever have imagined, being here this long. It’s panned out in a way I wouldn’t ever expected. I think I’ve had times where I’ve looked dead nailed-on to leave and then it can change so quickly in football and I’ve always been quite lucky in that respect that the tough times have never lasted that long for me, so it’s been enjoyable.”

The former East Bergholt High School pupil’s current deal was up at the end of the season with clubs having shown interest in this window. Sheffield United made a loan offer but were told the Blues would only listen to permanent bids, while MLS franchise Inter Miami were also keen.

Woolfenden has now made 197 starts and nine sub appearances for Town, scoring five goals.

Again shrewd business by Ashton, under contract now so price is good and he can't leave for nothing, home grown players are worth lots when it comes to the financials that's why Man Utd looking to sell Rashford and Gatnacho, pure profit. If we go down he be here, if we stay up I wouldn't of thought so, well done Ashton. Congrats on more money Woolfeden.

Played under McCarthy, Hurst, Lambert, Cook, and McKenna since he's been here. Must have some perspective!

I don't say this lightly, but Leejames99 could well be the worst poster on TWTD. It's some accolade.

Delighted for Woolfy.

Oooooohhhhh.....

Woolfy is a Tractor Boy
He plays in blue and white
He could have played with Messi but he thinks he's f**king sh*te
He'd rather play for Ipswich
Whether we're up or down
Just like Edward Ebeneezer Jeremiah Brown

Delighted. Regardless of his local ties, I can’t say I’ve seen him look less than any of our other centre backs this season. He’s also the best on the ball. Of course it may well be that the level of interest in him has persuaded the club that he will be a saleable asset this summer and the new contract secures that.. one season in the prem and his age means he’s high single, maybe even double £m in value now.

@GSOLY
Thanks it's an honour that your opinions are better than my opinions, let's just play all your fave old guard for next games Walton, Morsy, Woolf, Luongo etc
How was that a bad post all I said was its good business to sign him so as a homegrown player doesn't go for nothing.

Funny how same supporters think old guard should be playing, new signings are no good, and if we go down they all be sold but if an old guard signs they here for as long as contract.
Make your mind up, at least my posts are facts and I'm in it with Ashton and Mckenna for the progression and not wanting to live in the past, as good as it was the aim was to get to Prem, we have signed players (Boro are doing same now) that if we go down give us best chance to go back up straight away.
Fed up getting bad comments for sticking up for Ipswich Town, stats are Muric is better than Walton by a country Mike, stats don't lie, Morsy no good in Prem etc that's just fact, how many Prem teams in lower half have players from league 1? I tell you -
Much of this cash comes from Premier League clubs raiding top talent from relegated teams, as was the case with Nathan Ake, Callum Wilson, Aaron Ramsdale, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Jamal Lewis and Ben Godfrey this season.

But there are numerous recent examples to the contrary, such as Ollie Watkins, James Maddison,Jamie Vardy, Jarrod Bowen, Nathan Broadhead, Matty Cash, and Ebere Eze and a couple more all internationals at top teams.
We still have a squad full of them at present.
Anyone please heed advice god forbid mentioning Burns, Morsy, Walton or Chaplin the pitchforks come out and if you dare to mention Muric be ready for an onslaught.
Lighten up Gsoly does that stand for Got Signings Only Love Yesteryear? It's season 24/25 not 20/21 that was half a decade ago!

A player who can play out of the back. He doesn’t really need to be throwing himself about, a great reader of the game.
One of our own.

One of our own! I think he's done well when he's come in and has definitely developed under K McK.

Good news! Woolfy has done well to survive and thrive throughout the turbulent times of ITFC. I still think there is more room for improvement, and I suspect McKenna feels the same way.

Really pleased for him and at his age and the position he plays in, should have another 2/3 years of improvement in him too. Like other posters I think he's at least as good on the ball as any of our defenders and better than most. He must sometimes shake his head at the journey he's been on here. Just goes to show what hard work, some self belief, and of course some ability too, can do!
