Sick of all the posts about fantastic odds encouraging others to bet.

I do think there are huge double standards on here from gambling compared to drinking and drugs.

Where's the consistency?

I'm not sure there is that much of a double standard being exhibited by anyone with half a brain, and it is indeed difficult to convincingly argue that they are really that comparable, given one is illegal.

Moderation is the key, and most would agree that on all 3.

I was actually referring to something that J2 said (altho you couldn't have known that I meant it more specificlly of course) - namely, the way that taking illegal drugs is bigged up into being some sort of 'cool' activity on here. That's also something that youngsters can get straight into by going to certain areas of their locality. Yet gambling's the only thing that's picked up as having even *possible* negative problems! Double standards & hypocrisy on here regarding that is a fact I'm afraid.

I haven't objected to a side forum for gambling threads. And I think people are forgetting that Rommy was atually invited by Phil to write the racing tips threads/blogs.

I'm on here quite a bit and i don't see these threads where illegal drugs are constantly being bigged up and made 'cool'.

If you haven't read the thread, you don't know what's been said, the context, what it's been compared with etc. You know, the sort of thing you usually have a go at other people for not considering ..

I agree with the points he makes.

A youngster can go online, make up an account and start gambling, within a few clicks from this place. They can't just walk into a pub or supermarket and buy booze.

Do you agree or disagree?

Also it generally takes many years of abuse to get an alcohol problem. A gambler can rack up massive debts in a matter of hours.

Do you agree of disagree?

It's what I do, so I rather object to those activities being called "vices"!

It's not all about what you do though! I would say only having 1 pint and spending 1 pound at any given drinking/gambling session isn't the norm!

I have no issue with people who want to post about drugs or drink.

But why does 75% of gambling threads end with 'your an addict' stuff?

None of that on the booze threads depsite there being far FAR MORE drinking threads than betting

Possibly. But it's an extremely valid point isn't it?

It's an example of more double standards from somebody.

That's all.

Perhaps a cheap point

I have read a number of studies which argue quite convincingly that gambling is, in general, more pathologically addictive than alcohol, though I caveat that with the fact that I very much doubt that others on here have looked into it as much as I have (due to my own personal history, rather than any intellectual superiority).

So the short answer is 'I don't know'.

Drugs are bad for youngsters & they could very quickly get addicted.

Children and young adults need to be taught far more about managing their finances responsibly, too. There is no 'single fix'.

Especially with the ease of cash and credit, things have changed ridiculously since I left school and am 'only' 31.

As good as the digital revolution has been, I'm still not convinced that people should be so reliant on cards and online banking as opposed to cash which is gone when it has gone.

It's not the same. A youngster can go online, make up an account and start gambling, within a few clicks from this place. They can't just walk into a pub or supermarket and buy booze.

Also it generally takes many years of abuse to get an alcohol problem. A gambler can rack up massive debts in a matter of hours.

There's no double standards as far as I see it.

You're usually a reasonable and empathetic person, so I'm sure you can see where I and others are coming from. I'm not wanting to spoil anyone's fun, I just want it tucked away. Cigarettes are hidden these days... a separate board would be a good thing IMO. I know some won't agree, but there you go.

I'm sorry, that's just not true.

The ad and marketing men with massive budgets in the gambling industry make sure influence is put upon youngsters a long time before they'll get to read Roms posts. Every football ground has Bookmakers advertising, directly in plain view of family enclosures.

If you are under 18 you will not get an online account from any bookmakers...no chance. A youngster could pinch their parents details and maybe it could work.....however far greater crimes are then being committed.

I drank and smoked a long time before I had a punt.

Youngsters on average experience alcohol, drugs or tobacco on average four years before gambling (industry figures). Almost exclusively youngsters who have placed a bet under age have been enabled by a parent or family member.

I doubt my 16 year old can get his hands in some green by clicking a button on his laptop. And if he could there is still a process to go through before it arrives. He could get hooked on gambling by clicking a link on a website.

I was however agreeing with Dolly's point regarding the instant availability of gambling. I don't agree that it should have a separate category on here. People should be allowed to speak freely. I'd include swearing in that so long as it wasn't used to abuse somebody.

i completely disagree. You're assuming it's easy to get an online account. They have a lot more sophisticated systems in place to stop kids gambling than you think. I almost always had to provide ID verification when I first signed up to bookies. There is definitely some sort of database or check they do to verify whether they need more info.

I assume you are in favour of an auto block on online porn with people having to request access via their ISP? After all any kid with an internet connection and the ability to read can click 'yes I'm 18'.

I'm not sure using porn is a great example. No way should U18s have access to porn online, especially some of the grotty stuff out there now and the ease it is to get hold of it.
