Ali to be dropped? Bowling poorly & not scoring runs.

Difficult to see how this side can be improved. There really isn't anything in reserve unless I'm blinded by anger and dismay. Aside from 2010/11, ashes tours have become known for disaster from start to finish with players carrying injuries and careers being finished, with off field shenanigans destabilising everything. Aus simply have to put 400 on the board and we are out of the game. They are so ordinary yet quite a distance ahead of us. And other than Stokes, we have our best players out there already. I'm going back to bed.

The Ashes 2017/2018 Thread on 13:24 - Dec 5 by gordon | It's the hope that kills you though, isn't it? If they'd only just gone and enforced the follow on, we'd have crumbled to 132 all out, and we'd all move on cheerfully to the next test wondering if Gary Ballance might be the answer to shore up the batting and avert a 5-0 stuffing. You mark my words, Root won't make it past his usual 72, Woakes will nail a few cover drives for a 28, either Moeen or Bairstow will hit a carefree 46 and the other will give his wicket away for a duck in brainless fashion, and we'll lose by 88 runs. |
If only. | |

The Ashes 2017/2018 Thread on 09:17 - Dec 5 by SaleAway | In the last decade, England have been set 350+ to win 15 times. Not only have they never won, they've never got within 100 of the target. |

Well, Woakesy left me a few runs short, and Jonny dashed off a 36 instead of a 46, but unless you can point me in the direction of a more accurate prediction I'll be feeling relatively smug this morning.

For the last day and half England have fought their way back in to the contest and then this morning gone down with a whimper.

That makes our tail even longer. I think once the series is over, which could be the end of the next test, put Crane in lets see what he can do at this level.

Same problem as the last time we lost 5-0 on 09:37 - Dec 6 with 9409 views | Bobbychase | Cannot keep their bowlers in the field long enough to see if their reputed injury problems surface. Mitchell Johnson's action and pace took a lot out of him but that season he blew us away Australia were able to use him in short bursts because we never posted testing enough totals to make them spend long days in the field. Same is happening here. There were lots of doubts about their big three oacemen being able to last a whole series but we may never find out if those were unfounded or not because they can chase down our small scores while rotating the three quicks while Lyon takes on a large part of the bowling burden.

I was surprised Rashid wasn’t taken as cover for Ali, more experienced and can bat a bit. The only changes we can make with the players available would be to drop Vince and bat Bairstow at five, Malan four and get the other keeper (Foakes?) in. Mark Wood should play in the next warm up game and he’s an option - although would be harsh on Overton the ink Perth needs pace in the attack. Plunkett should be out there too.

Is there any good reason Bairstow isn't higher up the order? Tired after being in the field all day/night? Set my alarm for 3.30, went back to sleep when first wicket went, decent night's kip for once.
