....."It was never on. £5m? I've not spent that in my time here!"

"If I had £5m to spend, I would have to split it to strengthen the team anyway".

Can't disagree with that.

But even with £5m to spend what would we see on the pitch.

ME and MM out

Yep.

But, he always implies he's spent nowt. We've wasted loads on wages. Either for loanees or short term permenant signings that haven't worked out. Our wage bill is sizeable for a mediocre squad.
Yes, compared to the rest of the division it's still quite low - but that's not the point through. Money is tight. The club is losing money on matchdays due to dwindling PR crowds.

I just don't agree with the "I've spent nothing here"

A 5-million-pound player also involves vastly inflated wages unless you sign them from League 2.

So there's that as well.

Yes. There is that too. Had we even been able to afford the £5m, could/would we been able to afford the wages he'd have been demanding - plus afforded the wages for any other signings!?

Swiss Ramble released something in April 2017.

But that was for the 15/16 season (I think)
We were mid table on wages back then.

Our wage bill was something like the 6th lowest in this division last season and one of the lowest in the top 3 tiers of English football.

I'd say our wage bill is bang on for what is delivered on the pitch.

Jury is out on that one. Lawrence scored 11 goals in his 30 odd games here, not sure how many assists he had but he had a good record.

Celina also a good player, but, Lawrence is arguably more suited to championship football at this time.

But wages are a more prudent way of spending money though, aren't they?

Luring players with the promise of a bigger salary, all of which goes to the player (rather than their club) is a sensible way of operating, surely?

Look at someone like Waghorn, who might be costing us £500k-£700k per year in salary, on top of his £1m transfer fee (if it was that high) - compared to Lawrence, who will more likely be costing Derby £700k-£1m per year in salary, on top of the £5m fee.

Signing Lawrence would have required us to add an extra third to our wages budget (currently about £16m). It would have been madness.

I'm coming round more and more to Bloots' point that the Manager is hamstrung and that our ongoing malaise is not really his fault. Rhetorical question but who else could keep us up around the mid/top of the table with one of the lowest wage bills in the league?

Who cares about the rest of the division.
We have a sizeable wage bill for a mediocre bang-average squad.

I understand the scattergun transfer approach of Forest & Nodge seriously throws the Spending Table all over the place, especially when those teams aren't doing well. But wolves have spent big and they've spent well.

Because it's all relative isn't it? We have a mediocre squad because we have a below average wage bill, it's not rocket science. If we want a better squad we need better players and they cost more money in both fees and wages. There's a reason that sides with double our wage bill have better squads than us.

I don't buy that entirely.

PNE have spent even less than us & are operating with a much lower wage-bill than us.
We've both got 26pts.

Are you aware of Sheffield Utd's operating costs?
