As others have already said, putting young kids from all around the country in board and lodgings when they come to join the academy is a process which is as old as the hills.
You bring kids aged 16/17/18 down from Carlisle, or from Ireland, the North East, away from home, you can't stick them in a hotel or their own flat. They are hosted by a local family, to make them feel comfortable and at home.
Ask Beattie - he talks in his autobography about the club putting him in digs run by a "kindly looking lady called Mrs Strawn". He lived there for the next seven years apparently.
But, as usual, of course, for some it's another opportunity to take pot-shots at the club. Daft. | |
