Black and White- Unite and Fight! Thatcher is the Enemy!
Loads of Billy Bragg's to pick between, but this one is most apt for TWTD:
Will anything ever change? It's Sheep we're up against:
Sometimes pop stars get the message right, and make a difference, even if the manage to be self-promoting ego-trippers at the same time:
There's loads of great Blues songs which articulate the experience of African Americans in early to mid C20th, but one that stands out is Bo Diddley's "I'm a Man" in which he repeatedly insists that he is a man, and spells it out, literally, in opposition to all the white racists who called African American men "boy":
But the most powerful of all for me is Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit"about lynchings in the Deep South:

For those who may not be aware of the songwriter Joe Hill, it is worth a read up
"“Goodbye Bill. I die like a true rebel. Don’t waste time in mourning. Organize.”"
For those who side with the 'oppressed' and recognise that only througha n understanding of why they are 'oppressed' can they defendthemselves His was a determined example of how solidarity with your fellow man can work.
And it was not a mindset of holding your cap out (righty) for what crumbs might fall fom the table, but for a fair division of the loaf by those who made it.

Remember when Sheepshanks gave a cd of that tune to our first XI ahead of the relegation six pointer with allardyces bolton to fire them up, before we were four down in about five minutes.

What's Going On, contender for best album ever irrespective of its political outlook. Gil Scott Heron, pretty much a colossus and touch stone for black American music.
Good thread Callis, its got me delving into different era's but really Punk was my political awakening, so many songs from that time.
