Agree with the reasons why Italy has it worst but the article only briefly makes a comparison with Japan and the huge difference is just put down to strict travel controls and more testing.
I believe the UK has less than 20% of the population over 65 (less than Italy or Japan) and we tend not to share accommodation with grandparents as much as Italy, so it is frustrating our numbers are following the Italian path and not the Japanese one.

We're not meticulous though are we?
I used a shopping trolly tonight and did think if I ran that store I'd have someone out there spraying and wiping constantly.
Those things must be crawling with all sorts as it is.
No sanitiser on the doors either but maybe they can't get hold of enough to warrant that. Dunno.

I agree. Many are ignoring the advice. Some twot in Lidl today insisted on standing right behind me int he queue. I kept edging away- and he kept following. In Siansburys yesterday, some bloke coughed viol;ently without even bothering to cover his mouth.
We can ban social gatherings, but whilst supermarkets are heaving, and not subject to exceptional sanitary practices (handgel would be a start at the door- given people handle fruit and veg, and packets etc) we are not really dealing with this properly.
The presence of those seeking the truth is infinitely to be preferred to the presence of those who think they've found it.

The current (& perfectly valid normally) codes re plastic/other packaging should be suspended during this crisis imho - it's just not acceptable that fruit & veg which you don't either peel or cook might have been previously handled by several members of the public. I just don't buy that washing under running cold water is sufficient to remove the virus, and obv you're not going to wash items in hot or soapy water!

I was in Aldi yesterday and a couple of shelf filling staff were continually larking about singing Corona songs.
Beggars belief really.

I've been taking my own anti bacterial wipes to supermarkets to wipe down trolleys. Also straight after using a self service till I use hand sanitiser.
Pretty well stocked now. Nothing excessive and could use some more hand gel and paracetamol but from now on until this is over i'll be going to much smaller shops half an hour before closing to stock up on essentials. After being in Sainsburys today it's not an experience I want to repeat. To be fair most people seemed quite relaxed about the empty shelves but people coughing and standing half a foot away was irritating.

Lots of examples you could give on little things that could make the difference.
I filled up an Asda filling station in Eastleigh on Sunday. You fill up drive to the pay booth, they give the machine to put your card in and provide PIN number. These machine gets past back and forth hundreds of times a day. It was grubby, looked as if it hadn’t been given as much as a wipe in ages. It would only take one unknowing carrier to give you a hotspot for coronavirus.

First thing I do is put on one of the gloves.
If they're out of those, then the blue paper towel is the next choice.
Filthy things as you say.
We should dedicate a thread to hygiene tips to use when out and about!

I did at the pump but discarded it before I got to the pay booth.one of those where you sit in your car and they pass the credit card machine out of the window too you.

Wouldn't just giving your hands a sanitize immediately afterwards deal with that tho? a(ssuming you have any of course. Though maybe you'd then hve to sanitize the bottle of sanitzer with, err sanitiser? 🤔
Ahem... perhaps you have to factor in the government's inadequate response into your modelling? And selfish people emptying food stores.
The thing is vulnerable people die in winter. More die in winter in an uncaring society that has systematically cut back on care and healthcare. This is inevitable - its what 43% people voted for. In conservative parlance - it is the will of the people. Hopefully this will be a wake up call for anyone who voted conservtive over the last decade - but i doubt it - people are too selfish.
Even the spokespeople are now trying to calm people down now by pointing out 8,000 people die in a 'normal flu year' Actually it's 10,000 and there is no such thing as normal... it's just an average.
Current modelling suggests 20,000 people will die because of corona virus... it could be 10x more - nobody knows... the best guess is 20,000 at present. The thing is - they might have died anyway because of flu... the health care system breaks down every winter when there is a sick bug.... so any medical problem will be far more deadly than it used to be - there simply isnt the capacity to care.
The global hysteria about this is because it is new - and is acting a little strangely - a bit like a bio-engineered virus if you want to delve into the conspiracy theories... and hey not much being heard from Russia. Nobody knows what it could morph into next.... this iss just a mild version.

On Feb 21 Italy had 20 cases and 1 death, Japan had 105 cases and 1 death.
Now Italy have 31k cases and 2.5k deaths, Japan have 829 cases and 28 deaths.
If we do what Japan did and not what Italy did, we could have figures nearer Japan than Italy ?
Proof if it were needed of something I have been saying all along that no 2 countries are the same and necessarily need to copy exactly what the other is doing

I would be interested in the life expectancy of those who have died prior to catching CV.
Valid point. Surrounding the hysteria I have seen no statistics whatsoever detailing this information. Has anyone (sadly) perished that didn't have an underlying medical condition? We should be told.

Whilst I broadly agree with the thrust of your argument I cannot give you an uppie to cancel out that down vote - here's why.
Annual deaths from influenza are estimated to average 389,000 so I think you have your Union Jack blinkers on:
Secondly, you should not compare COVID-19 with 'normal flu' as the death rate could be twenty times higher, or perhaps the human immune system will develop more resistance as time goes on. No one knows yet (unless you have a time machine).
Finally, our health care system does not break down every winter. It gets stretched but keeps on running. But I do agree that we should do more to help it. Getting our facts as straight as we can would be a start.

It was me that downvoted the post as whilst most of it makes sense there was no need for the line about politics and not voting Tory, I’m not a Tory supporter and have never voted for them but now is not the time or place for more political points scoring or “told you so” answers. That is for another time after this has been dealt with

But seasoned politicos will tell you that now is exactly the time to get a point across. Only works if you get everything right though.

We should be told, it is critical information, another question is the locations of those who have died when they contracted CV. Were they already in hospital? These details may just calm what is an increasing and sometime perfectly understandable fear.
