What type of footballer were you or still are? 19:27 - Apr 10 with 3104 viewsMattinLondon

Just wondering what position various posters played - or if you’re still playing what position do you still play. Also which Town player you’d like to think you compare yourself to?

I was a right-back who could also play right mid.

I would like to think of myself as an attacking Wilnes, Tarricco type of player. But in reality I was more a poor mans Tony Dining.

Isthmian league is what I watch these days. It’s good fun. A man with pace at that level is king.

He is nowadays! I had pace and a bit of ball control, and could shout at centre-halves to get them organised but not the will to train hard enough to get any better - plus I had a fairly full-on full-time job at the time - I was more a player who'd play in the reserves to help 1st teamers recover from injury or youngsters progress into the 1st team - ie, a bit of quality but not too much! I think the manager felt I wasn't committed enough (ie, made enough crunching tackles) to play at a higher level and he was dead right! That's how I managed to avoid any serious injury - the equivalent level (BetVictor North) now is very organised and professional and has tons more money compared to 35 years ago!

You are the obsolete SRN4 to my Fairey Rotodyne....

'Vaguely midfield' was how I was generally described. Guy who skippered my works side described me as having 'one of the best football brains he'd ever seen and the two worst ever football feet' he'd ever seen.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

Forward, really good age 11, downhill from there. The player in the year above me who was my pier at my Suffolk junior school made a premiership living out of football and asked my sister how I had done - answer I lost the plot when my family left Suffolk.

Played mostly on the left either at the back or in midfield which was an annoyance of mine as my favourite position was central midfield. But being left footed you get stuck out on the left, despite being quite two footed.

Didn't play much Saturday football due to having a season ticket at Town from '92,when I was 17, but used to help out with St. Neots ressies when I could.

Currently play in a Sunday night 6 aside league and a bunch of 40 and 30 year old somethings can hold their own against most groups of lads half our age which is nice. I've always lacked pace so getting old and fat hasn't been too much of a hindrance so far.

Midfield mostly. I couldn’t score goals, not great in the air and no pace. I could get around the pitch though, tackle and move the ball on a bit. I would say I was a rubbish ‘water carrier’ type of player. I enjoyed playing though, as indeed I did/do most sports.

Centre forward the manager used to give the team talk and tell me and the lads not to worry I wasn't expected to score. Just make the ball stick and bring in others around me...... I took it as a compliment.... Not so much now!

Still I played with my back to goal holding up the ball (pretty well I felt) and being a nuisance for 90 minutes and loved it! So did the others as they did the scoring.

Goalkeeper in my teens from around 13-18, only played kids football, I was and still am a shortages so never came for crosses but was a good shot stopper and great at getting out to people. Used to play in a team with 2 big (for 15) brutes at CB so coming for corners was never an issue.

I guess I’d say I was a poor mans Laurie Sivell

Midfielder with not a lot of pace or much of an engine could pick the odd pass but not very often

Jonathon Douglas was a poor imitation

Slow, lumbering left back who hardly ever crossed the halfway line. Decent left foot but everything else was rubbish.

One-footed Left side midfielder or sometimes defender, I was pretty good until I had the ball.

Okay at tackling, very quick over the ground, decent at crossing. Could not head the ball (still can't), poor at running with ball, poor at riding a challenge but if I could use pace to find space behind defenders I could sometimes be effective.

I was a bit of a luxury player, the sort you would not pick away from home against a decent side.

I liked to play in the number 10 position, but was a bit before my time as when I played youth football (under 11's - under 14's) we almost always played 442.

I could pick a pass and the manager often said I could see things the other players couldn't but I had no real pace or strength just good on the ball and creative.

Centre half. Allan Hunter

I was quite the Berra, good at stopping the opposition get past me - by hook and mainly by crook - but I only had that massive upfield hoof. In my head , after I had won the ball, I had some amazing defence splitting passes, unfortunately, my head and the rest of my body didn't exactly co-ordinate themselves that well.

Nasty, aggressive centre half.
Win the ball, pass it simple. Rinse and repeat.

Had a decent turn of pace when I was a young-un and fit. Always happy to do someone else's running. It was the only way I'd get in the team as my technical skills were weak.

Had a good eye for the game which helped.

In all my years playing, I got three yellow cards, never a red, and scored 3 goals. One from the half-way line which was a lump forward but their keeper got it wrong and it bounced over him!

Have not played for 20 or so years as my injury wouldn't let me. I don't miss playing as I've got cricket.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

Creative playmaker. Quite slow with the speed but quick with the head. Before Corona, my speed was improving.
