This pressure to end the lockdown 08:50 - Apr 27 with 10604 viewsSteve_M

Is it coming from anywhere other than the same right-wing columnists and media pundits who didn't want it in the first place? Opinion polls at the end of last week remained broadly supportive and suggests much of the public isn't expecting an imminent change.

Yes, it is undoubtedly doing economic damage to the country but then tens of thousands of deaths do that too. It's too early and the UK lacks the testing and contact tracing facilities, as yet, to ease it significantly.

I'm not convinced by long-lens pictures which compress people into seemingly larger groups on tabloid front pages.

I have been wondering about the stubbornness of the new infection figures which do seem to hardly be shifting even though the number of new deaths are, albeit slowly dropping.

All I have come up with is that the new infection numbers are increasing alongside testing rates.

I have no idea if that is right, but it doesn't make sense for the infection rates to stay steady and yet deaths to drop.

We're just picking up way more of the non-serious infections now because testing is increasing.

We only changed our attitude this Saturday after discussions with friends and neighbours.
Still making sacrifices like not visiting the parents and if I caught a cold I'd definitely isolate myself.

No trolling, there's lots of people now ignoring this lockdown. The summers coming, the virus will go away for a few months, so enjoy life and stop worrying.

Thats a possibiilty. We can but hope. Thats still far more daily infections than can possibly be addressed through testing and tracing though.

Awful.

You can pass it on without having symptoms.

There is no conclusive evidence yet that the virus is seasonally affected.

You seem to know very little about a virus that you are dismissing.

"I know this is unpleasant to say but the vast majority of these people who died were economically inactive. Every death is a tragedy but this disease is currently not killing many young people."

That's not just unpleasant, that is absolutely horrid.

Yeah it does sound awful but I should have put it in better context.

Not sure that improves it.

Not sure I agree.

People know this is a big deal, they should know the lockdown is until they are told it's not. It's not like there isn't 24/7 coverage detailing this. The lockdown has perhaps the one thing that has had a clear message from the government. There is a lockdown for 3 more weeks then it is assessed again.

People have decided it doesn't apply to them for whatever reason and are doing as they please. I don't think they should be given excuses about "poor communication" for what is essentially a selfish decision to ignore the rules.

The three week thing is part of the problem. Only a short time in the future it might all be over. Except it will keep being renewed and the anger will grow.

I know nothing about this virus and it appears that scientists who have been studying it for the past 4 months are as equally clueless. All we have is modelling from Imperial College and they refuse to reveal their coding behind it.

But we do know that there are less rhino type diseases around in the summer. So lets enjoy this summer before the virus mutates and comes back much worse in Winter. You cannot expect lockdown for 18 months. Release it now and then it can be re-implemented in October.

Im really not seeing any anger at the moment- save from a few frothing politicians and media sources. At least, not directed at the lockdown anyway.

Other issues deserve anger- including why we seem to be heading for the worst record anywhere in the world so far. We seem to be rapidly catching Spain and Italy. People in many parts of the world are aghast at what is happening in the UK and we are taking it very calmly indeed.

I don't think you should really be given a platform to post what is, by your own admission, ill-informed nonsense. It's not even summer, a few warms days doesn't make it summer.

Observe the lockdown and stop being part of the problem.

What a selfish attitude. Its people like you who will prolong the lockdown. Stay in doors. Do as you are told. Id have the army on the streets if it was me. A rifle butt around the back of the head is all some people will understand.

It shouldn't be though. They have clearly said 3 weeks and then we reassess. They haven't said it might be over then. If they said it was lockdown for 12 weeks without reassessment loads of people would be angry about that as well.

People should be able to comprehend the message that has been given.

If not then perhaps we also need to worry about the state of our education system.

You talk of ten of thousands of deaths.
I know this is unpleasant to say but the vast majority of these people who died were economically inactive. Every death is a tragedy but this disease is currently not killing many young people.

My household doesn't care about this lockdown anymore and just like my neighbours on either side we are going out when we want and accepting visitors.

Except the USA, but I agree with your point - we are going to have more deaths than Italy - a country that were caught completely on the hop by it.

It's like we saw a tide of water coming towards our house but didn't bother putting sandbags out, the tide caught Italy out (whether it should have done is a different matter) but we cannot have the same excuses - it was happening on our relative doorstep.

We have an awful lot more than the modelling from Imperial. There is a large and increasing bank of data. With virtually all scientists (even the Swedish bloke) agreeing that social distancing is vital to inhibit the disease.

Covid-19 isn't a Rhinovirus.

Lockdown hasn't been going anything like 18 months. It's only been 33 days. Have some patience.

Absolutely - that was why locking down as early as possible was so important.

Infection rate is going to fall very slowly over the next few months (maybe at R=0.9 based on other countries experiences and comparing our lockdown to theirs), while at best estimates infections were doubling every 3 or so days pre-lockdown.

That means that the length of lockdown is made much, much longer by any delay in going into lockdown, assuming the key criteria for releasing lockdown is capacity to track and isolate every infection or cluster of infections.

In all seriousness, it is quite possible we will have the army on the streets if mass ignoring of the lockdown starts to happen and infection rates begin to rise.

I agree.

"Stay inside"

It says it all. People are ignoring it because they think they are superior and they can get away with it. Give these morons an inch and they take a mile.

The actions of all these dimwits could cost thousands of lives.

There is an argument for lifting some restrictions if we all wore medically approved masks but we haven't got enough so that ends that at this time.

Yes, anger was probably the wrong word. More frustration from those who don't understand why the lockdown is so necessary.

Bear in mind we haven't locked down as tightly as Spain or Italy, plus we have some way to go before surpassing their figures, certainly on a per capita basis.
