Well...we've outdone Europe on the most deaths then. on 21:05 - May 5 with 2026 views | Ely_Blue | It’s the lack of respect for the restrictions that haven’t helped with the death toll in the first place so whilst I don’t agree with lifting them any time soon people and businesses haven’t really helped themselves or the country by not sticking to what we were asked to do, it’s not too difficult surely?

Well...we've outdone Europe on the most deaths then. on 22:13 - May 5 with 1985 views | Guthrum | We don't know that yet. All we have is a number produced by the ONS under a certain set of criteria, which is greater than the numbers published by other countries using their own sets of criteria. If all the sets of criteria were identical, a direct comparison could be made. Otherwise, it's a rough guide to relative severity at best. Also worth bearing in mind we have one of the largest populations in Europe (fourth, behind Russia, Germany and France).

If you take england alone there are very few countries in the world now with a denser population. Most that are are places like Hong Kong, macau, Gibraltar etc. Taiwan, South Korea and Bangladesh are the only comparable or larger countries with a higher density

All the more reason to lockdown early then wouldn’t you say? Surely our government are aware of our population density? No one mentioned it until it’s all gone tits up. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Belgium locked down 9 days earlier and still have a much higher death rate. I think you’re right about them being aware of our population density though, probably a lot more than previous ones tbh.

You’re right of course that there isn’t a direct correlation between timing of lockdown and deaths, it’s obviously much more complicated than that. I do find this ‘population density’ excuse from those who slavishly follow the ones wearing blue ties odd though (not necessarily talking about you but I’ve seen lots of it on social media). If it really is the case that we were always going to be more exposed due to our population density then it makes the laissez-faire attitude of the first few weeks even more unforgivable. If a massive death toll was always inevitable/likely then what on earth was Boris doing fiddling at Chequers while the country started to burn. If they knew we would lose more people than Italy then why the fcuk did he not even bother to attend 5 successive COBRA meetings? Surely we should have been more cautious than most given our population density, not allowed the Cheltenham Festival to go ahead and thousands of Atletico fans to fly in from a Covid19 hotspot? Why were we not checking people entering the country if we were more susceptible than almost any country on earth?

Agree the international travel issue is the biggest in my view and particularly the atletico fans at Liverpool which we all found barmy at the time even. There was even precedent for that with juve fans being allowed to travel to Lyon on 26 Feb so I’m sure the Italian government must be getting it as well. I’m just finding the density stat staggering in a wider sense really than just covid related.

This website has a nice map showing population density but the table above it is weird. It shows "Paris" is the most densely populated region in Europe and the divides London into boroughs which are roughly half the density by square km. But it possibly shows that the density argument isn't at all what people think it is. I feel like there's this assumption that London is millions of people all sat on top of each other and Britain had other big cities which must be the same in people's heads. https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/products-eurostat-news/-/DDN-20170406-1?inheri A quick scan of the globe shows it's mostly small islands or places in Asia outside of China which have higher densities per km as a country - I notice one is Sint Maarten who was being praised as part of the "women leaders are better" trope in the news, but was actually the outlier, it was tracking similar deaths per head as us at the end of April when those articles were coming out. https://www.worldometers.info/population/countries-in-europe-by-population/ You can use this site to see our %of urban population is lower than people assume too. In Europe alone we're a bit of top 10 and globally we below plenty more. So this idea that it's only a major problem in cities which seemed popular doesn't work either does it?

I think the reference to 'Paris' there is for the small innermost district (effectively the 'City of Paris') judging by other on line information, with the other districts well below the London Boroughs.

I presumed so but it struck me as odd to present it like that, Paris is organised in arrandisements or something isn't it? Overall though you can see that density only really matters when combined with the response and the demographics which is data we just don't have to hand easily.

Looks as if Belgium correlates in terms of death rate with a high urban density, although i have to say i wasn't thinking about it in terms of any urban/rural split tbh. The other thing that sets us out apart i would say is that compared to france/italy/spain in particular, distances between urban areas are just much smaller. England as distinct from the UK as a whole just hasn't got any sizeable 'remote' areas anymore. Overall i just can't see how density can be dismissed any more than overall population size.
