My wife just asked if Beckham was one of the best 09:00 - May 19 with 9587 viewshype313

And I genuinely didn't know how to answer, first thought was no, but then thought about all the clubs he's played for and his achievements in the game and he must go down as a great, but for some reason I can't find myself putting him in the same bracket as Zidane, or Maradona, or Pele, or Ronaldo (both)

Strange one, I do wonder if his off field antics overshadowed his achievements.

One of the best English players I'd say.

Where he lacked ability compared to the greats he made up in dedication, professionalism (most of the time), effort and application.

Have up on Team England when he thought they'd given up on him and still managed a few more games.

Had taken what he's got and maximised it. I have a huge respect for him overall.

Assuming you're talking about Beckham rather than Scholes I agree totally with this post.
Bobby Charlton always said that Beckham hadn't got the natural ability that others had, but that he put so much effort into training it was unreal. Then when all the other players had gone for the day Beckham would still be going for an hour or two practising free kicks.

Neither was Zidane?!! Zidane absolutely was! the finest central midfielder to ever play the game. Ronaldinho was class as well but Zidane would sit above Ronaldinho although hard to compare their roles really. Zidane would be in the debate for best player to ever play the game. He ultimately probably wouldn't win but he's in the conversation.

Oh dear

I guess when you look at the suggested 'greats' they tend to include forwards and, above all, goalscorers (hence the ballon d'or justifications). Midfielders and playmakers get less of a look in and defenders hardly get thought of at all in this context. Goalkeepers seem to be a separate category away from it altogether. Thinking about it in a more balanced way, should the list of greats include Maldini?

Zidane wasn't in the top tier, Pele, Maradonna, C Ronaldo, Messi, he was in the tier below that, with Cruyff, Ronaldo (who would have been top tier without injuries,)

Ronaldiniho wasn't at the top for long enough, he was very, very good but in reality he had 4 superb years at Barca, then dropped off a cliff.

Nesta and Baresi should be in the conversation also.

He was a phenomenal footballer, and certainly one of the best England have ever produced. His celebrity detracted from how good he actually was IMO. Absolutely ridiculous passer of the ball.

His performance against Greece was nothing short of phenomenal. Not since Bryan Robson have I seen an England player literally be everywhere in a positive way and drag us over the line.

Indeed, he had a rare combination of great work rate and superb technical ability.

But would that one game put him in the bracket of one of the best to brace the game?

The more I think about it the more I agree with most on here, he was a fabulous footballer, got the most out of it ability, but wouldn't go down as an all time great.

Beckham was a top player, one of the best in the world for a little bit - not an all time great but certainly will go down as one of England's best ever players.

Forget the noise around him - he won the lot in the club game and kept coming back - ended up with major honours in England, Spain, USA and France and played hundreds of games at the top level.

He went to the US too early though

He wasn't a complete midfielder. For example, you can't put him bracket as someone like Maradonna, due to his lack of dribbling. However, what most professionals say is his passing was excellent. The way he could perfectly bend a cross-field pass around the defenders, right into the path of the strikers was unreal. I can't really think of someone who is on his level in that regard.

Zidane is over-rated in my opinion. Technically very good and the best of a great French side. But I wouldn't put him in the same bracket as Ronaldo or Messi.

I'd split "world-class" into 3 brackets, with the following examples
1. Messi, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho
2. Zidane, Kaka, Bale
3. Beckham, Ibrahimovic, Neymar

Zidane was not overrated, in fact you could argue he was underatted, he was an insane player, remember the 98 CL final, he bossed that and scored one of the most jaw dropping goals of the past 30 years.

I'm still SMH at the idea that anyone would consider one of the greatest midfielders to ever play the game "overrated" - Unbelievable Jeff.

You're thinking of the 2002 CL final

Zidane was an excellent player and one of the most graceful I've ever seen.

But if you are putting him into the "One of the Greatest Ever Players of All Time!!" bracket then you are overrating him.

Lack of dribbling is a bit of an odd criticism, and one that would rule out a number of top midfielders from this debate. Ballack? Scholes? Lampard?

Beckham had the perfect temperament, work rate, will to win and be the best, inspired those around him and backed it all up with world class technique, passing, vision, execution, set pieces. I won't lie, watching Beckham in an England shirt pinging a 60 yard diag is every bit worthy of being uploaded to pornhub.

Whether he fits into the bracket of all time greats is up for debate, but he certainly wasn't overrated in my opinion.
