Where he lacked ability compared to the greats he made up in dedication, professionalism (most of the time), effort and application.
Have up on Team England when he thought they'd given up on him and still managed a few more games.

Midfielders and playmakers get less of a look in and defenders hardly get thought of at all in this context. Goalkeepers seem to be a separate category away from it altogether. Beckham was a top player, one of the best in the world for a little bit - not an all time great but certainly will go down as one of England's best ever players.
Forget the noise around him - he won the lot in the club game and kept coming back - ended up with major honours in England, Spain, USA and France and played hundreds of games at the top level.

Lack of dribbling is a bit of an odd criticism, and one that would rule out a number of top midfielders from this debate. Ballack? Scholes? Lampard?
