My wife just asked if Beckham was one of the best 09:00 - May 19 with 9585 viewshype313

And I genuinely didn't know how to answer, first thought was no, but then thought about all the clubs he's played for and his achievements in the game and he must go down as a great, but for some reason I can't find myself putting him in the same bracket as Zidane, or Maradona, or Pele, or Ronaldo (both)

Strange one, I do wonder if his off field antics overshadowed his achievements.

Love these debates between who is a top player vs top, top player vs all-time great vs world class. Everyone has their own definitions so no one can agree. Generational is a new one I've heard which I'm not totally sure what it means.

Beckham was a really good player and would get into most sides. His crossing and set pieces were exceptional and you don't become one of the most-capped England players by luck.

Definition is always the key and it's subjective.

I have written in this forum before that Maradona is WORLD Class as he, almost single handedly, won the World Cup. He was also largely responsible for the rise of Napolitano from relegation candidates to Scuddetto winners.

Surely to be the best means winning the biggest trophies... That's rule out George Best, who in his prime, was surely THE best footballer the British Isles has ever produced, but he's "only" won one European Cup.

Many of the players named in this sort of thread have had exceptional players around them e.g. Messi and CR7.

"Napolitano"?

Both Messi and Ronaldo have both had great players around them which helps, but you only have to look at them to see how they both single handedly win games consistently on a turn.

They are both great players, just don't quite make it into the upper echelons of the greats for me... Zidane as a WC winner, however.. Does

As a world Cup player in 1998, Zidane had great players around him. Henry, Duggary and Viera didn't even make the starting line-up! Who did Ronaldo have in Euro 2016... Nani!?

Astonished by the lack of recognition for Zidane in this thread. He is in the very top bracket for me, never seen anyone play the game in quite the same way as him.

Incredible isnt it. I got the most patronising 'Oh dear' ever in this thread for saying is on the top table. Dominated games and stood out by a mile in on the biggest stages time and again. His influence was as big as any and was always the go to man. Outstanding player. Completely different to Messi and Ronaldo but he's right up there. What a player he was.

That's rewriting history a bit. It wasn't an outstanding French side and they struggled for goals. Guivarch (spg) up front who got 1 goal ever for France. Karambeu just as he was moving to middlesbrough was pretty poor. Petit was ok but they were built on a good defence. Zidane was outstanding. Lets not forget he got them to another World cup final and won Euros didnt he?! Viera was 21. Henry 20 and still playing wing. Neither was near what they became.

Portugal squad wasn't great thats true....but Greece won a Euros.....haha

I think Ronaldo and Messi are 1 and 2 (not in any order)...Zidane in the convo for next but still in that very top bracket.

I was going to make a similar point about the 98 squad earlier but couldn’t be arsed and wasn’t interested in debating something so ridiculous.

Anyone that doesn’t consider Zidane as one of the greatest to play the game is having an absolute lol.

Slightly on a tangent here, but do people here think his red card against Argentina was warranted?

For me, it wasn’t even a booking.

in todays game it is a red. In 98 it just seemed so harsh. In the prem at the time you would never have been sent off for it. Was stupid and we would have won for that. We nearly did anyway with 10!

Weird that he didn't receive a single vote for the ballon d'Or during his career.

Not really, because in those terms he wasn't outstanding. An excellent player who rarely had a bad game & had a great career at the top level. But a notch below the great players of the modern era. I would certainly put Rooney & Giggs both a notch above Beckham.

The discussion on here is very interesting and one that I've pondered on myself. A couple of years ago I had a long debate with my Dad and my brother (the latter who is a United fan). What we settled on was this:

- Is he in the best 100 players in history? No
- Is he in the top 50 players to play in the Premier League? Possibly, but would be in the 40s
- Is he in the top 20 English players in history? Probably not.
- Would he be in the Best English XI of all time? Yes, on the right of midfield.
- Would he be in a World XI of all time? Close, on the right of midfield.

These last three points were the ones made by my Dad that helped me settle on my view of Beckham, which is: He was a very limited player, who tended to shine in a great team. However, despite being limited, the things he was good at, he was elite at - possibly one of the best of all time. And those things were his first touch, his crossing, his dead ball delivery and his long range passing.

If I was naming an all-time Best XI for England, in a 4-4-2 formation, then I believe there are at least half a dozen better midfielders than Becks - but all of them were central midfielders and it would be wrong to shoe horn one of them in on the right hand side, when you consider how they would perform in that position compared to Becks. I'm too young to have seen Alan Ball and Stanley Matthews play, but my Dad's Best England XI had Ball on the right of midfield (his was very 1966 dominated) whereas me and my brother both had Beckham on the right.

But don't get me started on how good is/was Rooney!!!

Agree with most of that. Now i want to know your thoughts on Rooney haha.

For me Rooney had a fantastic career but could/should have arguably been even better.Talent wise the best since Gazza and he was a hard worker in games and loves football. In terms.of dedication to his general fitness/physical conditioning etc he was well behind a Ronaldo which stopped him getting near that level. Fantastic career though but lack of top level conditioning (and to be fair to him starting age 16) caught up with him as he got closer to 30.

Interesting that quite a few folk have mentioned Sir Stanley Matthews. At the time many felt that Tom Finney was the better and more effective winger.

No defenders. I do understand that comparing chalk and cheese is difficult, bu in my view Bobby Moore was an all-time great. Ask Pele if you happen to see him.

This really isn't true.

Outside of England where they could see past the Lampard/Gerrard argument I think most players thought he should be in the England side ahead of both of them.

A quote from Xavi:

"In the last 15 to 20 years the best central midfielder that I have seen - the most complete - is Scholes," Xavi said. "I have spoken with Xabi Alonso about this many times. Scholes is a spectacular player who has everything.

"He can play the final pass, he can score, he is strong, he never gets knocked off the ball and he doesn't give possession away. If he had been Spanish, then maybe he would have been valued more."

Fun Fact. Xavi's favourite English player was Matt Le Tissier

As a set piece taker and for range of passing, he was certainly top drawer

As people say, he was good but he wasn't quite top bracket. He was still an important player none the less.

I did bring up Maldini on page two of this thread, davblue responded to that with Nesta and Baresi. This could move the conversation on to whether central defenders are likely to get the kudos or can you look at a wider defender like Paul Reaney for football excellence?
