So, which statue are you going to protect? 23:30 - Jun 10 with 9385 viewssyntaxerror

The DFLA (Football Lads Alliance (now with apparent added democracy) are going to be protecting statues this weekend, from the evil destroyers of old colonial white men's statues.

So I am curious, what will members of the board protect?

A question for the FLA (sorry DFLA) guys on here - can I protect the Mandela statue in Parliament square?

The difficulty of right-on political correctness is where to you draw the line? Mandela was a convicted terrorist before he came a latter day saint. Give it a couple of hundred years and he could become a latter day Drake in an equally blinkered future.

In the far off days when I was a student in Bristol the Student Union self-importantly wrote to Mandela in prison saying he'd be pleased to know a large bar in the shiny new student union building was now The Mandela Bar - and the middle class students stand with you - at least for three or four cheap pints.

He wrote back and said please don't I am teetotal and don't believe in alcohol... so a much smaller salad bar was named after him instead.

I think what you're arguing for is statues to be given tenure on a plinth for a fixed period of time (let's say 20 years) to account for the ever-shifting boundaries of what is and isn't considered to be cricket. Every 20 years there would be a local vote to either continue or discontinue with the incumbent, and recommend replacements.

Would be a way to engage and educate the masses with history, have great local debates, and would head-off the stupid debates we're currently having.

Great idea.

Or just don't put any statues up ever again... there will always be some group which will get offended about someone about something and start crying.

Well quite. This isn't about people that once said a bad thing about black people, it is people that carried out horrific acts.

Yes, I also support this idea, no more statues celebrating power, in any form.

That wasn't exactly what I was saying...but cheers for proving my theory. It was a serious suggestion as it seems clear that unless you can guarantee that the person you wish to celebrate is a total saint, they will have held certain views which at some point in the future may prove offensive to some or all parts of a society which has moved on.

And my point was that there is a massive difference between holding certain common views that have changed over time and contributing to and profiting from the slave trade.

And even if so, who cares if you eventually have to take something down a few hundred years later? Why does it actually matter?

total saints? yeah but those saints come with all sorts of religious baggage. we need to rip the effigies of saints out of churches as well. and then burn stuff.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

The moving on bit is key. Things change, accepted norms change. No big deal otherwise those statues wouldn’t have gone up in the first place and we’d still all be idolising stone circles.

Yes indeed - and views change over time and presumably will increasingly do so in the age of instant global communication and 24 hour global news, etc etc

Also the sheer absurdity of it all is quite interesting. What about Roman slaves? Do we demolish every Roman statue and Colisseum where slaves were slaughtered (and idolised?)? The Greeks? The Vikings? The entire Arab world? The pyramids are slave-built monuments.... once you start don this route there is no end to it.

I'm not sure you can airbrush history for what are often transient ideals judging people who lived to different values in a different era. There is no statue to Adolf Hitler that I can think of - but I've seen a very big one of Genghis Khan in Mongolia..... so give it time.

It's rather more crazy to shed crocodile tears now. Slavery is a long way from exclusively being a 'black lives matter' problem

Do you want the Colliseum in Rome demolished because it is a monument to slaughtering slaves and perish the though, christians. Maybe christians do't matter though - especially the wrong sort of chrisitan. The pyramids - built by slaves - do they have to go too?

When the right-on brigade start to poke a stick at Baden-Powell and Francis Drake by way of Cecil Rhodes you have to wonder where it will stop...or more worryingly IF it will stop

What current issues are particular people facing today that can be directly traced back to the Greeks?

Romans is obvious, they destroyed a perfectly good grid system for roads, and now we have too much traffic around London. But that is more of a annoyance really, that is shared with all commuters.

As usual, in a desperate attempt to be edgy and contrarian, you are intellectually dishonest. The examples you raise are very obviously false analogies.

The Colliseum is a ridiculous example, it isn't a monument to killing slaves. It is a building where that happened, but it doesn't celebrate that it did. It's historical importance

Statues are there to honour the people of whom they portray.

Pyramids are slightly more interesting given they were to honour the pharaohs, but again they are more important from a historical perspective. Also the idea they were built exclusively with slave labour is incorrect.

Honestly, I'm not worried at all if people decide they no longer wish statues of people to be there. What exactly is the issue?

I've got the Giles Statue opposite Barclays Bank covered this Saturday.

I tweeted my fellow patriots at Ipswich Conservatives asking for assistance but no reply as yet. Reckon they're busy.

Please note: prior to hitting the post button, I've double checked for anything that could be construed as "Anti Semitic" and to the best of my knowledge it isn't. Anything deemed to be of a Xenophobic nature is therefore purely accidental or down to your own misconstruing.
