Lincolnshire. Any county that contains both Boston and Grimsby is a place to avoid. One positive thing about climate change is that most of it will be underwater in 100 years.

If the southern half of Essex was a separate county, that would probably be a clear winner.

I know a few Yorkshiremen and women too. They're good value.

But I've spent most of my time in West Yorks and South Yorks in and around Huddersfield and Rotherham. They seem sound but I don't know much about the rest of them.

North Yorks folk are generally great people. Staithes is the best place in the world. Thank goodness I never exaggerate.

Essex has some beautiful places.

It's just the people who live there.

Plus the very worst, Staffordshire. The only place in the world where the locals wish they were Brummies.

I was thinking of nominating Staffordshire, but it seemed a bit unfair as I only have a limited knowledge of the place.

Really Burton sprang to mind, but then you have to consider that the lovely Lichfield also somehow fits into the same county.

Offaly - over three weeks of glorious sunshine we had, then we crossed the river at Shannonbridge and the drizzle started, by the morning it was torrential (see avatar) and looking round Clonmacnoise a mad dash from one sheltered bit to another. Here is one of the highlights of a visit to County Offaly from the Wikipedia page:

'Offaly largely comprises a flat landscape and is known for its extensive bog and peatlands. There are many large bogs in Offaly including the Bog of Allen, Clara bog, Boora bog and Raheenmore Bog which are spread out across the county with the Bog of Allen extending into four other counties.'

Wouldn't the locals object to being referred to as a British County?

There aren’t enough downvotes in the world for classing a county in Ireland as British.

Having said that Offaly is a bit of a hole

Well Leitrim didn't object - but I get the feeling he would think an opportunity to get shot of Offaly would improve the Republic. It's true that footers did not term it 'the Home nations worst county' but there is a geographical logic to retaining the term 'the British Isles', and drawing the distinction between that and the United Kingdom (and then excluding the six counties if we want to refer to Great Britain); because 'that archipelago off the north west coast of mainland Europe' sounds a bit clunky.

Counties invoke visions of trees and countryside eg Berkshire, Suffolk.
And then there's Middlesex.
A concrete shoitehole that has been consumed by Greater London but surprisingly still exists.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Having lived and worked in many places across the country - including several mentioned here this is my general reflections.

Suffolk (Born and raised, moved away at aged 18) - beautiful county with some towns that are dumps (Ipswich, Felixstowe, Stowmarket, Haverhill) and some of the best small towns and large villages around (Woodbridge, Southwold, Newmarket etc.). Populated with some of the friendliest and most down to earth people you could ever meet. Really safe. Beautiful coastline, although beaches are very average.

Yorkshire (studied at Uni here for four years) - my favourite county. Once you get past the initially overwhelming 'Yorkshireness' of the locals you realise they are proud, friendly and loyal folk. Beautiful countryside, interesting cities and incredible history. I moved away in 1996, but there will always be a bit of my heart in the place. Only real issue is Leeds Utd fans - morons!!

Lancashire (did my postgrad here). A weird place. Really arrogant people who think it's gods own county, but my perception was it was like an inferior Yorkshire in almost everything about it. Slightly less beautiful, cities slightly more grubby, people slightly less friendly and lots more rain.

Berkshire (lived about 10m from Reading for four years - albeit just into North Hampshire - but friends and work were all into Berks so don't know much about Hants). Just a really vanilla place. No obvious virtues, but nothing fundamentally awful about the place. Certainly been to many places worse than Reading, Bracknell and Slough.

Staffordshire (worked there for two years - commuting in on a Monday and back home on a Friday). Quite similar to Berkshire in terms of having nothing going for it, but I found the main towns/cities (Stafford, Burton and Stoke) to be much bigger dives than Berks. Certainly would never hurry back and would put it very close to worst county.

Essex (lived there for seven years). It's two counties in one. I would argue North Essex (Chelmsford upwards) is very similar to Suffolk, but actually a bit nicer. Chelmsford is a nicer town than Ipswich, Clacton is rubbish, but slightly less rubbish than Felixstowe, Braintree not that different to BSE, but several of the north Essex villages are absolute crackers. Then there's everything South of Chelmsford and into NE London - god awful towns, god awful people.

Tyne and Wear (my wife is from there so I know it well). Lovely place, great coastline and Newcastle is a great city. Sunderland is a dump, but the people are really friendly. Just miles from anywhere!!

Which leaves the worst county in my view - Humberside. Had to work there on and off for a year. Can't think of a single place that I couldn't wait to leave. Everybody is miserable, Hull is a dive, Grimsby smells of fish and the coastline is dotted with oil refineries. Awful awful awful

Some persuasive arguments for Berkshire but I can’t look past Staffordshire, mainly as it contains Stoke plus a stretch of the M6 on which I’ve never had anything other than a nightmare

Although I’d really like to say Norfolk but the coastline is wonderful and even Norwich is nice if you subtract the residents

Humberside did used to be (for twenty two years) an official county:

Similar claims could me made for Avon, Middlesex, Rutland, Huntingdonshire and Westmorland.

Which Essex? The rolling fields and pretty villages it (mostly) contains, or the sh*t it becomes the nearer it gets to London?

There is a book called, I think, 'Great British Bus Journeys' in which the journalist who wrote it goes off at a tangent about the two Essexes and suggests that they should be split with the south of Essex renamed, after mouthy Tory and MP for Billericay Teresa Gorman, 'Gormandy'.

Quick vote for Greater Manchester. The City of Manchester is all soot-stained, panhandler-strewn, terraced filth, full of sarky-sounding northern spitmonkeys and stuff that was new in London in the seventies.

If you ever want to know what the Great Depression would have looked like in the UK back in the 30's, go and spend a day in Manchester. Rejoice in its grime and its fecundity.

The only issue with the split being at Shenfield is that technically places Harlow into North Essex - and Harlow is one of the worst places in the country.

If you make the split at Chelmsford then you can draw a line which has Harlow in the South Essex.

Plus Shenfield is effectively a suburb of Brentwood and Brentwood is definitely London spillover.
