I’d take him like a shot. If not in management, then as Director of football. He’s just what this Club needs.

I'd be happier if our lot were interested in a return to football.

The best manager we’ve had since Burley IMO, closely followed by Mick.

I think it’s quite telling that so many players who played under JR absolutely rave about him as a manager, his people skills. I would have him back in a heartbeat.

Joe's biggest asset is us supporters and most of the team could understand him.

Top 3? You must have him ahead of Burley and Lyall in that case, which is pretty bonkers for me. I'd have him in a fight with Mick for fifth, possibly just losing that fight in the basis that Mick would have taken the squad Royle worked with up imo.

Royle put together a team of rejects and youths. He didn’t have any money to spend until the signing of Currie. In addition to managing to get a pretty grey team (on paper) to the play-offs multiple times. We played the best football I’ve seen on Portman Road. On that merrit - better than Mick.

Royle inherited a very good squad, I can't agree that he had to cobble a squad togegher. He didn't have money to spend but not many did at that level during those years and we still picked up quality players like De Vos and Davis on freebies because we were still a big club in the second tier. I'm guessing you must have started going during the Royle years based on this post. He did a decent job but I'm not sure he really over performed with what we had at our disposal during his time here. I think Mick would have taken that squad up.

Was a great manager for us. Played exciting football and scored lots during his time. Had an eye for a bargain. Kuqi Horlock and Currie stand out. Got the best out of players too like Westlake and Richards.

Uh, Horlock?

Very good signing that gave our cobbled together midfield balance.

He is in my top 3 town managers. if he had the budget Magilton or Hurst had, we’d have gone up again.

Completely agree. He’d have done wonders with just £2M. I think he was once quoted as saying something similar. The style of football - attack - was also great to watch.

I think he struggled in this part of the country anyway , did he not leave a similar role in Norwich after about a fortnight ?

I don't think there's any chance Joe would come back here in any role. Think he's happy settled in the North-West and don't think he has any ambitions of managing again, he is 71 these days after all.

He was a dinosaur when we had him, just imagine it now. He had an embarrassment of riches but failed, when the going got tough he was horrendously found out

I don’t doubt that at all. Let’s be honest, he could be in his hundreds by the time Evans does anything about Lambert.

Lambert isn’t going anywhere.

No, but we might have got Alan Mahon, who would have made the difference when it mattered.

What 'embarrassment of riches' did he have? Do you mean that bunch of softies who couldn't make a tackle in 2001/02?

He made them play again.

mccarthy was a dinosaur not Joe. mccarthy lost one player in Murphy and we only finished 4 points of the relegation. Joe had lost 4 key players after 2004/05 and we could have been easily relegated in the following season with a different manager in charge.

Who cost us zero pounds. And Huws has been a better signing than Parkin was.

this is going to hurt but Super Mick will always be remembered as a serial over achiever for Ipswich. Big fat dino Joe will always be an under achiever
