One of my husband's all time favourite bands. I like them too. I think Drive is my favourite and The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight, even though it still sounds like he is singing "calling Cheryl Baker" :)

Top tier band for me, so many great songs and despite the overall quality of the albums declining from roughly late 90s they still managed to record great tracks individually. Their ability to adapt their sound whilst still being unmistakably *them* sets them apart from a lot of bands of their era and those that were influenced by them.
Could probably pick one off every album and spend forever going through each one but Sitting Still from Murmur is the 'gun to my head' answer for me. Fairly straightforward by their standards but in many ways shows what they're about - taking a pretty standard rock song formula and dropping in bits of beauty in the odd lyric or guitar riff. Pretty much everything from REM can be traced back to Murmur.
Honourable mentions to I Believe from Life's Rich Pageant, Near Wild Heaven from Out of Time, Nightswimming from Automatic for the People, What's the Frequency Kenneth from Monster and Imitation of Life from Reveal.
Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.
Cant pick my favourite, as they've been one of my all-time favourite bands. Loved seeing them at Portman Road too. Here's a few I'd say were up there for me, although I could've added many more...
They became my go to band for upper sixth and first couple of years at uni - which was 1990-94, so at their peak. Probably still one of 4-5 bands that I put on a pedestal of genuine greatness. In my mind they did one EP and ten albums straight all of which I would give at least 4 stars to - a remarkable run.
Would find it impossible to pick a favourite, but these would be #1 tracks off their albums whilst Bill Berry was in the band (for me they never really recovered). Murmur is without question the finest debut album from any band.
- Chronic Town EP: Carnival of Sorts(Boxcars)
- Murmur: Sitting Still (but jeez I could have picked any from 4-5 tracks)
- Reckoning: Time after Time
- Fables of the Reconstruction: Wendell Gee
- Life’s Rich Pageant: Cuyahoga
- Document: Oddfellows Local 151
- Green: the untitled 11th track (for reasons I have never been able to explain at the point 2:09 in when Stipe comes back in after the musical break literally brings a tear to my eye every damn time I listen to it)
- Out of Time: Country Feedback
- Automatic for the People: Sweetness Follows
- Monster: Let Me In
- New Adventures in Hi-Fi: Leave

Indeed so many classics;
Losing my Religion is one of my all time top songs Otherwise.... - Perfect Circle (indeed Murmur was a superb debut album) - Immitation of Life
and yes, loved seeing them at Portman Road, so a mention for "Electron Blue" the song for which Michael Stipe wore a Town shirt.
