Abuse, winding-up, bans etc 20:37 - Aug 24 with 8210 viewsPhilTWTD

Think generally the forum has gone pretty well over the lockdown and beyond and has been a really good place to be during a difficult time. However, the last week or so has got pretty unpleasant. I really don't think anyone should need reminding that abuse, stirring, winding-up etc is not welcome and those that continue to do it won't be welcome, as is now the case for a couple of previously regular users. A return to the civility of earlier in the summer would be appreciated.

I think, sadly, this just goes to show that people who use this forum fall into 3 camps:

Camp 1: Actual humans who appreciate the things they say have impacts and that they are engaging with other humans. People who want to get something out of this place and rely on it in some way. They treat TWTD like a family WhatsApp chat and understand that your 67 year old dad won’t always relate to your 17 year old nephew.

Camp 2: People who spend half of the time wanting to be in Camp 1, but can’t resist Camp 3. They go overboard due to bottling up the feelings. They treat TWTD like Reddit.

Camp 3: People who just treat the internet as a place to say anything, be anyone and just not give a f**k. They treat TWTD like the YouTube comments section.

I want to be 1, but sometimes fall into 2. There are far too many of 3 in this world and it makes for a very depressing place.

Quite right. It’s a fact of life that people will not always agree with your point of view or you with theirs, what’s important is respect, respectfully agree to disagree, be civil and move on.

What if the point is clearly fallacious or worse?

Should lies or falsehoods also be treated with respect and civility?

Indeed. If people are spreading falsehoods or plucking opinions out of their arses and continue to do so when this has been politely demonstrated to them, I'm not sure quite how much respect they really deserve.

If 99% of the rows on here took place in a pub, those involved would resolve it over a pint in about 30 seconds.

Sadly, the nature of the internet sees them tool up, face off and bring in their mates behind them.

Yes, you should always remain civil, otherwise you lower yourself to their level. Be robust in your defence but keep calm and polite.

A poster who was quoting David Icke got upset when I used the term "loon". It wasn't polite but sometimes I can't be arsed tbh. I do try and keep it civil though.

Possibly the best threads there have ever been on here have consisted of folk with mental health problems talking frankly and being met with great sympathy by others with similar problems and others without. I have more than once said that the folk who run the site should be very proud of some of these threads.

We cannot pretend that the last 6 - 7 months have not been mentally taxing for many people, not least those with a history of these problems.

However even given this understanding there must be limits, and I have rarely over the years felt that I disagreed with bans imposed by Phil.

I have given you an uppie for that post, but it is mainly to soften the impact of taking you to task over the double negative in the second paragraph.

There are two negatives in the one sentence, but I reckon they mean what I meant them to say - possibly. As it's you I'll let you off.

It’s the oh dear thread and another one that got pulled, can’t recall what that one was supposed to be about.

I got back in yesterday evening after climbing a mountain to see what had developed on the 'cancel culture' thread I started in the morning but could find no sign of it, so I presume 'That's it for the other one'.

I know anything on 'cancel culture' will probably become contentious but, as proposed legislation may have an impact on what we post on TWTD, feel it should be discussed. I do feel some regret that the discussion started so poorly and am sorry for introducing a thread which has caused Phil yet more grief. Obviously I am not sorry for trying to get views aired on the topic, if posters cannot get their points across effectively and resort to insult the that is their problem and not mine - unless I am the one doing the insulting (which I do do inadvertently at times.)

Indeed - but all used correctly. Double negatives are only wrong if you end up saying the opposite of what you meant to say when the sentence is clinically examined!

Was getting particularly nasty with one poster, PMs as well as on the forum, which was the final straw. Had also had run-ins with two other posters over the last couple of weeks, both of whom had made complaints about him and who don't seem to be using the forum any more as a result.

I liked much of what Libber’s posted but he could be incredibly intransigent about certain things. One recently was his hero worship for Tommy Smith where he posted that we’d should all welcome the signing of a player with 300 Championship games under his belt and a World Cup appearance regardless. Except you know he certainly wouldn’t if the player’s name was Knudsen, not Smith.

For the record neither have 300 Championship appearances. Smith has around 240 spread over 10 seasons, while Knudsen had 140ish over 4 seasons

It's not always possible to agree to disagree and move on though. For instance in the case where two women both claim to be the mother of a child. How would you handle that?
