I can remember this day like it was yesterday

There were some great goals amongst our seven that day.

We could have had a goal of the game competition instead of goal of the season.

I was there, and like you it seemed just like yesterday, I remember that goal and Beattie’s, Plus whymark’s 4 goals !! Good times which I took for granted

One of Whymarks goal involved a series of one touch passes with PM that I rate as one of the best Town goals I’ve seen

Great person and great footballer. Always thought it's great for him that 2 sets of fans consider him to be one of their best ever players.

There is a reason why Paul Mariner is in my avatar pic. He is my favourite ITFC player and I’ll happily argue the best to play for Ipswich. Ok I’d probably lose the argument on the latter, by my goodness, what a player and what a privilege it was to see him play.

He was a far better player than recordings show. He was quick, skilful, knew where the goal was and brought players around him into the game. With his great positional sense, his partnerships with Whymark and Brazil were devastating and while the team could cope with one of those two missing, it struggled without PM. He was also as hard as nails in an era where there no hysterics, little ‘simulation’ and if you did a naughty one, payback would follow! In the FC Cologne’s centre half’s case, the start of the 2nd leg!

Mariners debut was sensational. It was obvious what a player we had within about 10 mins of it starting! In the FA Cup Final, he destroyed Arsenal and I suspect Willie Young is still trying to unknot his legs. In the 6-0 Man Utd game, he tore holes in them all afternoon and I think got a hat trick. But I have so many good memories of PM. Get well soon Mr Mariner.

Averaged 17 goals a season over 8 years, but before assists were measured - which might well have near doubled his goal involvement.
