Best squad on paper maybe. It was also a squad hungover from relegation and well used to losing and not being able to recover well from set backs.

The obsession that we should be walking the league is just baffling.

Every side coming down has a hangover from relegation, in the last three years only Bolton have done worse than us immediately following relegation. They had a points deduction and nearly went bust, ffs. I find it ironic that those who think themselves enlightened and think those of us who think we should have made top 6 minimum are living in a bubble are actually the ones who don't look at the bigger picture. We're in a toss league where relegated sides usually do well because it's such a toss league compared with the Championship. It's not about thinking we're amazing, it's about understanding our strength relative to the dross we're now playing every week. There's no excuse for how poorly we've done under Lambert.

Respectfully, why?

Because we had a big squad of lower-level Championship/top need League One players, large budget for the division, an allegedly 'proven' manager and a 12 match unbeaten start?

Old players with no legs, young players without experience and no chemistry. Lucky we stayed in league 1 last year tbh.

Who's responsibility is it to build 'chemistry' within the team? I'm not surprised there was no chemistry when he made 4 or 5 changes almost every game and flitted about between several different formations.

Thinking we should be finishing top six minimum is more reasonable. Not to be a smart arse but I predicted mid table at the start of last season, but at the same time you can't say that it was a good season, obviously.

I've genuinely heard someone say recently "the only positive is that we're third, and even that isn't a positive because we should be pissing this", which for me summed up some of the idiocy around.

Fair point regarding recently relegated sides, but big big clubs have spent a number of years where we are, and our relegation was one of if not the worst since division one became the Championship in the early 2000s, I think only Blackpool's performance was worse overall when they came down.

Rotherham did worse than us 3-4 years ago and came straight back up. I repeat, in recent years only Bolton with a points deduction and nearly going out of business have done worse than us. That's inexcusable.

When we came down we didn't have the upheaval of a change of management or ownership. We didn't lose key players. In fact, Lambert was backed to offer James Norwood twice as much as Championship side Charlton. How many League 1 sides spent £500k on a player like we did with KVY? The squad is and was plenty good enough to at least seriously challenge for promotion. Our failure to do so is abject and Lambert should be long gone.

If Lambert can get us up which obviously I hope he can, I will be delighted. However he really needs to start being more honest. He blames everyone but himself when the chips are down. The banning of Phil Ham has caused a lot of unrest, that was a very bad move. He thinks he is bigger than the club. He makes out the pressure doesn’t worry him, but it is so so obvious that it does. Rather than alienate the media and the fans he should do himself a favour, just come out and say he’s got it wrong but the coaching staff are working hard to put things riight and the prove it on the pitch. Great, I pleased today, we got 3 points. But it was against Plymouth (no disrespect Paul Mariner connections and all that) but they had to be reduced to 10 for us to get them. He really could have helped his cause today with his post match interview, but he chose to put on the sulky school boy impression. Paul just be honest, stop blaming anyone but yourself. You’re the manager, take responsibility, please!

What does any of that actually mean? What counts as being a proven Championship player? Myles Kenlock has over 50 appearances in the Championship, is he a proven Championship player? How many of our rivals are packed with proven Championship players?

I don't think that's a particularly interesting or pertinent question to be honest. I'm not sure what relevance the strength of the Championship is considering we're not in the Championship. The point is that our squad is strong relative to those we're competing against in this division, League 1.

What business did Gillingham have last season finishing above us? Their budget is tiny compared to ours. I can't think of many or any of their players that would get in our side. We nabbed their keeper before the season and he wasn't a nailed on starter for us. We loaned them Roberts who couldn't get a sniff here and he was a key player for them.

However you cut it Lambert's under achieved here relative to the resources he's had at his disposal.

Delighted, but I'm not convinced he's the best man for us. With this squad, even with injuries, it shouldn't be a hard job to take us up for any manager with any degree of ability. In fact, it must harder to get a squad like this to finish 11th at this level.

I think it is pertinent. To be promoted to the next tier you need players capable of playing at that level i.e. they are too good for their current level. Our wage bill is high because we paid players whilst in the championship. Doesn't mean they are good enough for the championship does it. People apportioned the blame for last year on the chopping and changing of the team but then show no appreciation that all the injuries this season have necessitated different teams every week....not through choice. Clearly at the start of the season there was an appreciation that a settled team would be beneficial

No you don't. You need to be one of the best performing teams in the level you're operating at. The ability to compete at a higher level is of no relevance whatsoever.

How many proven championship players did Wycombe, Oxford, Fleetwood, Gillingham et al have? All of which finished above us. Less than we did I would wager.
