Anyone on a new year health kick? 12:39 - Jan 8 with 2159 viewsclive_baker

A few weeks in December (and probably well before then in reality) of eating terribly and drinking every night definitely took its toll. Bit of a Jan detox for me and already feeling slightly better for it, and lost a bit of timber albeit it'll mostly be water loss. Wouldn't say I'm in bad shape but definitely been slack lately. It's hard WFH to be active, I used to do 5k steps on a bad day without trying just on the tube, walking to my office, stroll at lunch etc.

Anyone else on a bit of a detox?

I'm surprised to hear an eco warrior like yourself let them use a plastic bag!

Good man for the weights & wagon though, it's nice when you can measurably see progress innit. Health body and all that, good luck with it. I've started boxing a bit again in my garage, feels very Rocky going in there when it's cold and dark out and smashing the bag about.

To be fair I needed one just so it had extra support in my backpack. That was a fun walk back from town with 20kg on my back! I'd hope not eating any meat for 4 years and no longer owning a car means I can be forgiven for using a plastic bag.

I've actually been thinking about doing some kind of combat training, my mate says BJJ is great for people of my build as you can learn to kill people without actually being 'ard haha.

But I am easily in the best shape of my life RN. I'm not the skinniest I've ever been (comparing to 18-19 years old) but I'm deffo at my best muscle wise.

I came out of a bad depression a year ago and saw myself in the mirror, and thought BALLS, I've got really fat. Joys of an alcohol problem I guess.

I've had peaks and drops in my fitness routine since but I've overall remained on the straight and narrow, even what I'd call a greedy day now is nothing compared to 2019 - I'd have a bottle of Lucozade, a whole big bag of bacon fries and a takeaway lunch most days on top of a hangover.

Do 21 thrusters? Is this a workout or a gangbang?

My bare minimum evening routine RN is...

Pushups - 35, 25, 30, 30
Sit ups - 50
Crunches - 50
Leglifts - 40

And then on top I'll usually do an assortment of lifts with the dumbbells. Do each exercise until it hurts, wait 2 minutes and do it again until it hurts.

Think of thrusters as kettlebell swings but for men.

They really are the king of all exercises for me.

Your routine is good, how about chucking 30 seconds of wall sits in between each exercise? Your legs will be trembling with a deep wall sit.

I’ve told our 2nd Officer that we are doing 100 burpees a day every morning for the next ocean crossing. 26 days. He’s not so keen, but is willing to do it.

I’ll probably find some Crossfit workouts to do in the afternoons on the crossing.

I didn't realise exercises were gender specific!? You're better than that Newcs :(

I'll throw wall sits in tonight and report back.

30 seconds of deep wall sits. You won’t regret it. After every set.

Ok you might regret it for a few days. But trust me. It toned the hell out of my arse!

For me, the parts I really want shot of re the last of the side back love handles and the gut fat.

I'm down 4 inches on my waist vs last year but I took it easier the last 6 months of 2020 so got a bit more work to do.

Plus it's relative innit? I feel like I'm out of shape now, but actually 6 months ago I looked almost the same and would have said I looked good compared to 6 months before.

Eye opening experience to feel first hand how eating disorders and body dysmorphia starts.

I can struggle to get motivated but like you once I'm in the zone I'm loving it.

Back when the shops were open I would buy a shirt or a top that was a size to small for me, hang it up and take it out each week and try it on until it fitted.

Like you said, it's motivating to see the results.

Don't forget the rest days, they're vitally important!

I've been in a bit of a work out routine since the end of October, but after 10 days off over Christmas have stepped it up from Monday, doing either a cardio or strength based training every weekday.

previously, I was doing body weight workouts for strength, but have now bought some dumbbells to mix it up. Living in a second floor flat with gyms closed my work out options are a little limited.

My diet is back in check and with the pubs closed and no one to socialise with I doubt I'll have a drink for a while - unless tomorrow's football drives me to it!

I've basically been furloughed since March and mostly just been home with two toddlers. I had noticed I was carrying a bit of extra girth and had gradually been putting on weight over the last few years but yesterday (on my 37th birthday) my new photocard driving licence arrived and maaaannn my face looks fat!

This week I've managed to do three decent bits of exercise so far despite the cold and yesterday's postal delivery shock has willed me to continue! Only trouble is we've got so much bad food in the house and my will is not good at the best of times (although luckily I seem to have the sort metabolism where I can get away with not eating all that well if I commit to regular exercise)

I am. I tend to have two massive blowouts a year. On my main holiday and over the festive period, which is pretty much non stop drinking and eating from December 1st to my wife's birthday on January 3rd.

Managed to put on nearly two stone in six weeks.

As I type this I have just finished a 10k run on my treadmill. I've been on the treadmill, exercise bike and cross trainer every day since the 4th. No booze and cut out the sweets and deserts.

Already lost 10lbs since Monday, a lot of which will be water, and I'm looking to stay dry until I get down to my target weight which should be March 1st.

Then I'll do it all over again this year. Eat, drink, rave repeat.

Does that not put a big strain on the body though? Ultimately do what works for you.

I prefer to keep a regular routine all year but if I want to enjoy myself on the odd occasion I do, I just make sure the next day I continue my usual routine.

A peloton is very good for this if anyone has one.

i'm back on the wagon now after a bit of a fat Xmas.

Got some new dumbbells, on 10kg ones now, which is good as I'm doing the same reps as I could manage with 7kg ones 5 months ago.

I also had to go into Sports Direct to get them much to my dismay as no where online had any good prices. Whilst buying them the woman at the counter put them in a plastic bag on the counter, which I picked up, the bag broke and the weights smashed the glass counter and went through to land on a load of expensive sunglasses.

I don't think the staff enjoyed me and my partner bursting in hysterics over it. Go in Mike Ashley's store, spend £55 and leave after doing around £500 of corporate property damage. Opps, oh well.

Me and the missus have given up on no meat during the week. It was her really; said she needed the protein. But to be honest, we didn't lose any weight from it, which surprised me.

Trying to exercise more now it's a new year. I had a personal trainer before lockdown 1 - so no gym and no PT since then has taken its toll on my belly!

Ditching meat alone won’t help you drop weight, particularly if you only dig it for a week.

The trick to weight loss is calorie deficits, which is why I love MyFitnessPal and Fitbit as a combo.

Also, the myth of vegans lacking protein has long been debunked. She’s making excuses! You can tell her I said that too haha.

Damn straight, I get way more protein in my diet now than when I ate meat mainly because I actually think about what protein I need so ensure each meal has plenty

Try doing Cindy

20 minutes, as many rounds as possible of:

5 pull ups
10 push ups
15 squats

I’ve just done that. It’s a great way to blow off the cobwebs after feeling a bit unhealthy.

Plus you can do it again a months or two down the line and see your improvement. Keep score

How many full rounds + whatever amount of reps on whatever exercise.
