Agreed, I think until you've eaten in really good restaurants it's hard to understand how something that looks so expensive is actually really good value for money. We're just round the corner from Cumbria now, and there's about 11 Michelin stars floating around in there, and most of them offer a vegan menu too.

People have always said good things about it. It was a popular vegetarian place for quite some time before that. It's directly opposite the Old Cannon Brewery, for anyone interested, which means a decent pint or two is right on the doorstep too. And only a few hundred yards from the railway station. Nice one. Must make the effort sometime myself!

Arf. Even fancy restaurants like inveterate booze hounds who order lots of food, so long as they aren't shouty or dressed for the beach. I only swear in the boozer and at work Jeerers. And at the end of the garden obvs. And the football. And the beach.

I'm only playing as you know. What brought you up this way then, or do you have ties around Bury? You're City based I think?

Yes of course. No real ties at all in West Suffolk, and come to think of it was an unusual pain getting there! Well worth it though.

Bury's not bad part of the world at all. You need to visit your roots [Suffolk] more often than just for the football. Bury is a funny one though train wise, with no direct link to London. But if there was one, the town would explode and become 5 times its size overnight, so it's sort of a protection really. It's already doubled.

I'm in Suffolk all the time. Just not Bury ;) I agree though, it's good.

I see a place very close to me just got it's first star as well, ate there before all the C19 lockdowns so will look forward to going back when it's all allowed and sensible. Always nice to be able to walk to the restaurant. SB

May I enquire where? Seeing as you're not a million miles from me. I am definitely looking forward to a quality meal cooked by somebody else once this madness finally ends.

Fine dining can be a great experience, other times you feel they’re taking the p*#s and it’s more fun to have a pork bender and chips in Felixstowe!

Because the Michelin Guide rewards "Exceptional Cooking" with one or more Stars, and that has historically been interpreted by their inspectors as incredibly process-heavy cuisine. It takes a huge amount of labour, with associated costs, and not every area supports that approach in sufficient numbers to make it viable. There are burger or pizza restaurants or pubs where you will have a great night and eat fantastic burgers or pizzas or traditional pub grub, and they may even become your favourite restaurant, but they will never get a Michelin star because they don't demonstrate any artistry or innovation in their cooking. And there are restaurants which are overlooked, that, in my opinion, thoroughly deserve a Michelin star, notably Benedicts in Norwich amongst East Anglian restaurants. In a Michelin star restaurant you can expect everything to be perfect. In a 2 Michelin star restaurant it is perfect with a twist. In a 3 Michelin star restaurant you should be blown away.

Lots of lovely restaurants around but none that made the grade previously. The East is a bit of a deadzone in that regard - there are none in Essex now, two restaurants in Norfolk and only Midsummer House (2 stars) in Cambridgeshire that are recognised with stars.

It's worth adding that the Michelin Guide also has two other categories: Recommended restauarants and Bib Gourmand. I've never been let down by a restaurant in either category. It's a very safe way to pick a restaurant, in this country or abroad in those countries covered by the Guide. Bib Gourmand are supposed to be the more affordable options. Top tip: London has LOADS of Michelin starred restaurants, and many of them have lunch menus at half the cost or less of their dinner menus. You can have a Michelin starred lunch for the same cost as a ticket to watch Ipswich Town play 3rd Division football. You don't get the same value options elsewhere eg Birmingham's four one-starred restaurants are more expensive for lunch than many in London because there are less Michelin stars per head of population by a huge margin, and it is the competition in London that drives down prices.

Will be heading there this year, got my partner a gift voucher for a night away there including the full tasting menu. I've wanted to go there for years so really looking forward to it. [Post edited 26 Jan 2021 10:31]
