It's over 30 countries at the moment I believe (all of South America and most of Southern Africa). Given the E484K mutation seems pretty easy to achieve I would think it's likely more places will be added and possibly even when one is on holiday. So it might be allowed but it might also be quite risky. Also worth noting other countries might not want us given the Kent variant also has instances of the E484K mutation now.

Was Spain lower risk last year? Studies showed that virtually all the cases driven in September were from the Spanish variant which came back with holidaymakers from the summer.

I think realistically it's too early to speculate on all this stuff, we need to wait another 3 months and see where we are.

SB

I missed one point.

The Sept uplift was driven by returning holiday makers from Spain rather than schools/universities returning?

While that's true of many, there are also a lot of people with family overseas who will be desperate to be reunited, or with very legitimate reasons to travel aside from wanting to drink from a fish bowl in the Costa del Sol.

There are always ways for essential travel.

The challenge we have is we need to continually get more stringent because idiots exploit genuine 'loopholes'.

For example, not travel related, but footballers having hairdressers come to training grounds using the TV/broadcast exemption

Virtually all cases in Autumn were tracked back to the Spanish variant I believe. That's not the same as being a driver on infection though. I was more making the point that places might seem fine but people could easily still import a variant which isn't great.

Nobody knew that this variant was being important until well after the fact.

Doesn't mean there can't be holiday, just a cautionary tale. Also on your other post - Portugal is on the red list due to close ties with Brazil.

That's a bit different from a foreign holiday. I would be happy if the government covered the cost of rapid testing for anyone entering the country to be reunited with family.

...doesn't get two weeks in Torremolenos with Sandra, eating a full English everyday, washed down with 12 pints of Fosters (he won't drink or eat any of that foreign muck) then there will be trouble.

A few points about Spain:

1) We need to remember that the Spanish (and other Europeans) are unlikely to be vaccinated as early as we are. So it's also about protecting them.

2) Any contact abroad with no isolation period (which holidays obviously won't have) threatens to bring home a mutation

3) Is there any need for those just wanting a holiday to actually go abroad when they have the whole of Britain to travel to?

I just don't see how the benefits to the few outweigh the risks of the many unless things dramatically change.

Your third point is a very good point, me old fruit. We should all be supporting small British businesses once this thing is under control. Many will desperately need our support right now.

So while we protect our friends in Europe we can explore more of this beautiful land :)

The, is there any need for a holiday line, is so 2020.

But I guess it could be recycled for 21.

Keep it in the back pocket in case it’s needed in 12 months time, mind.

I find it unhelpful to recommence the casual disparaging of people suggesting they might like to travel again, for whatever reason.

That may be because I am desperate to get back to the red lion in torremelinos for my fosters and full English though.

Am totally in agreement that it will benefit everyone to holiday at home, there are many beautiful places to visit, a lot of history to consume and many businesses which will need support.

Playing slight devils advocate though, holidaying in the UK is often quite expensive which is one of the reasons so many people holiday abroad.

Because people are selfish.

Come on, people wanting a holiday doesn't make them selfish.

Getting round the rules, no argument. But those who are happy to follow the rules are not selfish, many have been living in extremely stressful situations - whether than is home schooling, dealing with a death, living in cramped conditions etc, etc.

To portray people who want an oversea break as selfish isn't a sensible position tbh. Some are, of course. Many others are just ordinary people living in incredibly stressful situations.

My counter point is that having a pop at people who express a desire to travel again is unhelpful at best. Disdainfully describing people as needy, and selfish as EG just has on his response, does not an enjoyable forum make.

People will travel if they can and there’s a fair to middling chance that they won’t be able to, but the looking down on people expressing a wish to do so, is a bit sh1t IMHO.

It really is. Travel is extremely expensive as well. When it costs ten times the amount to get from London to Edinburgh than it does to Spain, makes it difficult to persuade us to holiday here!

But as a man of the world, a week in Corby doesn't sound too bad.

You're right - cost of a holiday in Cornwall in August this year won't be cheap.

I hope we do better with the campsites this summer. Last year I gave up on a short break to Wales as I couldn't find a campsite that was open and had open toilets/shower blocks. Many kept the shower blocks closed due to CV worries - which basically meant tenting was impossible for more than a couple of nights.

It's true though.

I get why people want to travel and I used to fly 100+ times a year, but right now they are saying "I want to do what I want" without thought to what they could be taking to a poorer nation, or bringing back to the UK.

Selfish is maybe harsh, but thinking of their own needs over others is fair.

Surely you have to weigh up that want with the situations in each country by merit? If we all get jabbed before the European countries do in the summer, why is it fair that we may be spreading the virus while immune ourselves over there?

I don't want to suggest people don't travel at all, and there's not really much to stop them anyway, but isn't excessive travel one of the lessons learnt in controlling the illness? Surely a little restraint while everyone catches up is only fair.

I think you’ve missed the point. By all means travel but perhaps do so in the country where the risk is minimal rather than having to go abroad for the sake of it. We are in a global pandemic. I am not having a pop at anyone. I’d love to be sitting on a beach somewhere abroad as much as anyone. I just don’t see the point in risking what will hopefully be normality at home when we have nice places in this country. The weather might not be as predictable and it might not be ideal but again, global pandemic...

I don’t think restrictions on people travelling abroad are wrong if it protects normality at home. If someone brings back a new variant which takes hold then we’re back to square one. I don’t think being concerned is wrong.

I'm being purposefully short on it and i've answered more fully below.

My point is I get people want to go on holiday overseas (as do I), they might say they are vaccinated, but not think of the impact on the location they are heading to.

That was to my 'selfish' point.

I get this is incredibly difficult for billions of people
