I believe we are, once again, getting half a story. He said the PM would be giving a timetable for 'opening up' on 22nd as we know. He just refused to give any indication early.

Literally on video saying it, but it has surprised many of us today. The official line on quarantine hotels is September, unless things change dramatically which by default means foreign holidays are also out. The UK bit i'm sure is a mistake, but it is a mistake he repeated in 6 different interviews this morning. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Depends where the countries on the list for quarantine are surely? Is it not possible that there may be travel corridors again? Even right now, the hotels are only for people returning from a relatively small number of countries.

But quarantine hotels are only coming in place for those returning from the high risk places right? (South Africa - Brazil etc.) Which would suggest lower risk destinations (E.G. Spain or Greece) could well have a similar approach to last year? Especially if they come up come with a vaccine travel passport scheme of some sort?

WHO recommend Oxford/AZ vaccine for all ages (inc over 65's) on 15:47 - Feb 10 by m14_blue | Don’t think the 12 week gap was ever really contentious for Oxford one was it? Still good news for it to be confirmed though. Any news on Pfizer one yet? |
It was very contentious in the EU. Macron, German MEPs, you name it. All part of the hostility towards AZ and this country to deflect blame for their own mess ups over vaccine procurement. Tbf the clever people here explained the knowledge and reasons behind their thinking and there wasn’t too much criticism in this country.

It’s a big risk a country falling into that category whilst you’re there though isn’t it. I’m pretty pessimistic on the likelihood of foreign travel this year.

But he also mentioned February 22nd and was clearly just trying to avoid the question. Foreign holidays being out isn't really a surprise. I think if we can get the UK back to 'normal' and the only thing we can't do is travel abroad then that's a massive win. The people who "need" a foreign holiday will just have to get by with our thoughts and prayers.

It's over 30 countries at the moment I believe (all of South America and most of Southern Africa). Given the E484K mutation seems pretty easy to achieve I would think it's likely more places will be added and possibly even when one is on holiday. So it might be allowed but it might also be quite risky. Also worth noting other countries might not want us given the Kent variant also has instances of the E484K mutation now. Was Spain lower risk last year? Studies showed that virtually all the cases driven in September were from the Spanish variant which came back with holidaymakers from the summer. I think realistically it's too early to speculate on all this stuff, we need to wait another 3 months and see where we are. SB

Not so sure. Spain, Greece, Portugal - these guys have a huge amount of their economies based on tourism so will be keen to have tourists if possible/safe. Throw in the vaccines and am sure they will be wanting visitors so will be looking at travel corridors. And many people will be wanting to take a much needed break if possible. So there is clearly a lot of demand, if it deemed safe enough. Can see no reason myself why traveling to France is any more of a risk than traveling to Cornwall or Scotland (By car). And last year many people did travel over the summer and CV rates remained low throughout the summer. The key for me would be ensuring destinations have CV secure rules in place around pubs/nightclubs. These are places where spread is likely. Whether that's possible...who knows? We'll find out soon enough... [Post edited 10 Feb 2021 17:02]

It's all speculation and decisions will be made much closer the time. Absolutely. Just not quite willing to rule them out in my head yet :-) Spain actually jumped around - I know cos I followed closely as I was supposed to be going to the Picos and instead opted for Germany where rates were much lower.

While that's true of many, there are also a lot of people with family overseas who will be desperate to be reunited, or with very legitimate reasons to travel aside from wanting to drink from a fish bowl in the Costa del Sol.

That's a bit different from a foreign holiday. I would be happy if the government covered the cost of rapid testing for anyone entering the country to be reunited with family.

We're going to see vaccine nationalism/patriotism across the world. Look after your own first and only then allow the 'dirty foreigners' in. You're right, vaccine passports will play a part, but probably too early for this year to have a workable solution. Likelihood if people do open is the three test model where you need negative tests before you travel, 2 days in and 7 days in. It is recognised countries were naive last summer too.
