Another card in football? 08:40 - Feb 14 with 1991 viewsMattinLondon

The good thing about football is its simplicity. it’s fairly easy to pickup with easy rules to follow. But I was thinking, what with so many yellow cards being shown (compared to say ten years ago) is it time to introduce another card into the game?

For example, Teddy Bishops second yellow, when he was sent off, was quite soft. Do you think if it was deemed to be a ‘green card’ offence, that would be more fitting? Say two yellows equal a red but two ‘greens’ equals a ‘yellow card’?

Just a thought.

I think there has been enough changes for the worse over the past couple of decades.

Possibly so. Tho I would go yellow -> orange -> red. Green equals "go ahead", or "ok".

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Just more confusion. Would there be a challenge that amounts to a straight green/orange by-passing the yellow?

I guess any new rule change does lead to some confusion but I’ve seen so many games where a player gets sent off for two fairly soft yellow cards. Or, a player is booked early on and gets away with another certain yellow as the referee doesn’t want to send that player off.

Compared to the changes in what is deemed handball I think a new card (lesser than a yellow) makes more sense.

Alternatively, go with 3 yellows = red ?

Or maybe a striped yellow/red card?

I've always backed another card. Some fouls are borderline yellow or red and end up with a yellow that is no different to kicking the ball away. There is a yellow dissent sin bin now which was the right idea but poorly done

Not another card but how about the sin bin for say 5-10 minutes when given a yellow card.

Also, when a referee knows a player is up to something (whispering in an opponent's ear, little nudges and other sh1thousery) then he should hold up an artichoke to let the player know they are on to them and will get a yellow or red out as soon as they have a valid reason.

In theory a single bin for dissent is a good idea. But in the past, I’ve been given a utellos card for simply asking why the ref had awarded a free kick. No swearing, just a basic enquiry.

It will need to be properly thought out.

You have an orange card and get a sin bin for however minutes, that would work reasonably well?

How about alternative punishments for card offenses?
Either, yellow card or 100 lines, ‘I must not .........’ (add description to suit offence)
Second yellow or 10 strikes with the slipper in the centre circle - this could be a corporate thing where the match sponsor gets to administer the slipper.
Red card or player must finish game wearing a training bib with a massive spurting c0ck printed on the back?

Indeed, a 10 minute "sin bin" for a yellow would cut out many of the petty, cynical fouls. Might mean that some goalkeepers would be less likely to dally over every goal kick!

The good thing about football is its simplicity and you want to introduce a more complex card system? Putting that asisde, it's not a bad idea though. But orange is better, as it is halfway between red and yellow.

I remember a referee giving Norman Hunter of Leeds a second booking in a match years ago (before cards were used) & not sending him off. Probably a breach of protocol.
