'The work led by Public Health Scotland found by the fourth week after the first dose hospitalisations were reduced by 85% and 94% for the Pfizer and AstraZeneca jabs respectively.'

I'm sure that Plague Harry will be along shortly to tell us that it's actually all down to better public health or something. And then show us a graph which he thinks demonstrates his point but actually disproves it.

There is the small matter that an awful lot of us have been in various tiers or locked down for a signficant part of the study period, so results are bound to look 'spectacular' against such a backdrop.

I'm not saying the experimental vaccine(s) haven't had an effect, but if the majority are indoors the fourth week after the first dose, then hospitalisations are bound to be reduced.

I doubt the reduction will be solely attributable to the experimental vaccine(s).

That isn't what the study was about, it was specifically about those who entered hospital in the period and what vaccines they had or hadn't been given:

"The study looked at the numbers being admitted to hospital with Covid among this population and compared it to those admitted who were not vaccinated."

So being in lockdown has no relevance as it is looking at cases once they have been admitted, not comparing cases from before vaccinations and lockdown and after.

Pssst: they're not 'experimental' if they've passed testing, etc and have been licensed. They're simply 'new'.

It is good news, it has been suggested though that the big numbers may be unhelpful as cases increased slightly in weeks 5 and 6 compared to week 4. Data will be lumpy though until the overall number gets large enough to be more meaningful.

Excellent! Good for you. My vax-envy increases by the day!

What is heartening is that the data that is emerging is positive. I tend for look for trends in things rather than specifics and all indicators look positive. Ok, there are uncertainties with timescales, new variants etc, but in terms of what is known and what the clever people (incl scientists etc) are doing, knowledge and progress is being made and that’s as good as it gets.

Cheers, I do find it a little depressing that offering the less acceptable side of a debate is taken to represent a fixed contrarian position. I have to admit I was surprised at the speed at which I was offered the vaccine (aged 56) particularly after Suffolk's slow start.

On the flip side my Mum is 62 and was offered it on Saturday, whilst friends of hers in their 50s had it a couple of weeks ago.

It's all a bit of a muddle, due to how the system works with smaller GPs, and the big hubs of them - the smaller ones been more nimble and flying through their patients.

Indeed, they’ve done well. I was about to trample all over the Suffolk Coastal MP when they were slow offering my dad an appointment and here am I living in Kent, a little older than you, with nothing! Haha

Seriously, what is good is that there is flexibility built into the roll out because the objective has to be as many people as fast of possible, now they’ve tackled a high % of those most at risk. Big thumbs up to all the lads and lasses doing the do. I gather the initial problem in Suffolk was storage of Pfizer vaccine. There just wasn’t enough places to store it.

Frustrating on a personal level but entirely understandable and inevitable on a macro one.
