The audacity of speaking out 06:55 - Mar 9 with 6801 viewsbluelagos

The misogyny of many monarchists is coming through in spades. Seems to some that Megan should know her place in life, and it clearly isn't in highlighting to the world the failings of the Monarchy.

Sorry Megan, it's not as simple as you're kids are a little bit too dark, it's also that you have an opinion and are willing to share it...

Fck that nonsense. Team Meg for me :-)

The monarch is done and has been for quite some time. It's on life support whilst the Queen is still with us but once she leaves us nobody cares a jot for the simpleton ramble that she has left behind.

It is however an excellent study in genetics and inbred populations for some university students out there.

Does that only apply to the monarchy or monarchists as well?

Like how was Harry born a ginger?

Most if his mother’s family are ginger. Doesn’t take a genius to work out where his finger hair comes from.

Unless you believe in the time travel theory in which James Hewitt jumped in a Tardis, went back three years before he met Diana, impregnated her, before travelling back to 1986 two years after Harry was born and started his affair with Diana.

Well yes, but Stokie's point was after that after Queen has passed away, sentiment might be a little different.

And I don't think he's wrong there. I don't think Charles or William have quite the same popularity that she does.

THink you're doing William down there. Without knowing anything much about royals, he seems to be a bit of a forgotten 'victim' in all of this: potentially just as scarred as his brother by past experience, but but gets on with his job.

My point was framed in a future scenario whilst that poll is for the current scenario. Whilst still higher than I expected the support from people below 50 is lower than the older age groups (as expected) and the support is very firmly in the Tory camp. I still feel that could change fairly quickly and that poll is from a few weeks ago before the latest round of information.

I think we can revisit this a few years after the next monarch takes their place and see where we are then.

Fair enough, although reading more of the demographic data shows a fairly significant shift the younger people are.

So I still think Stokie's point is correct. It is dying, maybe not immediately but I can't imagine it's going to take many more hits, at least without modernising again.

Maybe the under 50s in that poll will be like me when I was under 50 (and Town looked they might even have had a chance of getting back in the Premier League), I couldn't see any need for the monarchy back then. Fifteen years on and some philosophy course that had me considering Machiavelli and Thomas Hobbes has me on the side of the monarchy (just about) for the stability it brings to the United Kingdom.

Can you expand on how a 15th century philosophers thoughts on monarchies are valid in the 21st century? I genuinely don't know and it's been an awful long time since I read The Prince. Also stability is obviously possible without a monarchy given that is the state of many other countries.

As for the UK itself, that might also be on it's last legs depending on how things pan out in Scotland.

Assumed his comment was tongue in cheek. A fallacy peddled for self-preservation no doubt.

Even if it were true, there is no way they should have their hand in the taxpayer pockets with a nett worth of hundreds of millions.

Yes it was very much tongue in cheek, hence why I gave you an uppy.

The problem isn't the personalities involved, it's the perpetuation of the anachronistic, deferential, class-ridden institution called the monarchy itself.
The Queen is, rather like the Pope, above criticism but she has actually been a big part of the problem by reusing to accept any modernising of the institution or slimming down of the bloated "royal family". She has also continued to pin medals & bestow titles on her family with impunity. We used to laugh at Idi Amin for doing the same thing!
