Friday music time. Most underrated bands. 09:40 - Mar 19 with 7634 viewsLord_Lucan

I am going to suggest a strange one because they were actually one of the biggest bands of the 70's - but should have been even bigger, they are also overlooked these days because of the glam connection.

I read Dave Hills autobiography recently and he said Slade were in the right place ant the right time but I disagree, I think if it wasn't for Glam and if they had dressed normally they would have been much bigger.

Ozzy has said that Noddy Holder has / had the best voice in the history of rock and I'm not sure you can argue much against that.

On top of Noddy you had the ultimate showman and great guitarist in Dave Hill, Jim Lea was a hugely talented musician and Don Powell was the banging man

Unfortunately they moved out to America to try and crack the USA but it was the wrong time and when they returned Punk Rock was in full flow.

Noel Gallagher has said that this song is one of the greatest songs of all time.

I think this is probably my favourite

Or this?

Lots of bands I could list, but will just do this one for now. They of course had a few hits here but not enough for my liking. This was one that wasn't a Top 40 hit and it deserved better.

On a similar tip to some others, I'd say the Blue Orchids were nowhere near as big as they should have been. For a post-punk band anyway.

I saw that (or similar) interview last night.

I have regressed into Glam this week. I get the urge from time to time.

Glam was years before my time (born in 82), but oasis led me to Slade, and I agree, they are fantastic. Would have loved to have seen them live (closely followed by The Clash).

ROC. I imagine I'm the only one on TWTD who's heard of them.

Also the Electric Soft Parade had an amazing debut album, one of my favourites ever, and then disappeared;

Not sure he entirely fits the bill of underrated but Elvis Costello has to be up there for me.

Of course when he finally pops his clogs the radio stations will play Oliver's Army and A Good Year for the Roses whereas from a huge back catalogue there are many better songs. A personal favourite ..

Then of course there is the ultimate underrated band Big Star.

I remember years back The Mean Red Spiders were very good and The Lacey St Blues Band - I think that what they were both called.

Although I think it's a stretch to include them in an underrated bands section with the likes of Elvis Costello** and the like.

**I am sure Elvis Costello is brilliant but I have listened to nothing of his as Olivers Army put me off and I don't really like his voice.

Ditto Prince. I have heard a fair bit of Prince and I am convinced he is one of the best musicians in history but I just didn't get him.

Around the same time as Slade, you had T.Rex, Bolan was a genuinely talented musician and songwriter. A few brief years of big success, then a few lean years before a promising comeback cruelly ended with his untimely death in a car crash.
The Sweet, underneath the glam exterior were a quiet heavy rock band, very under appreciated and underrated by many.
Thunder never got the recognition they, IMO, have deserved over the last 30 years. Danny Bowes has one of rock’s finest voices, fantastic live act too.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Lacey St Blues Band is indeed correct - seen many a time in various pubs. Most memorably for me, outside at The Railway where I first met the future Mrs YBR.

Yes I agree.

I had a couple of glasses of plonk the other night and paid £5.99 for a Sweet concert which I watched for about three minutes before falling asleep.

I don't know a great deal about what happened after the glam era, didn't the singer (Brian Connelly)?? get ill and become a bit of a hobo?

The concert I stupidly bought was after the 70's and they had a singer with wild black hair.

Ride a White Swan album was the first record I ever bought - well I'm not sure if I bought it as I would have been about 8 or 9, maybe my Mum bought it for me. Strangely it doesn't show up on the Discography??

Do you reckon it's one of those KTel things?

I think I still have that album. Got a load of boxes to unpack this weekend after moving house Wednesday. I’ll look see if it’s in the old record collection. Don’t think it was one of those K-Tel thingys though.
Sadly, Connelly became a bit of a mess, drink and drugs I think, but Andy Scott was still touring with his version of the band. Good gig at the Apex 18 months ago.

Judging from the logo at top right it looks like that was released by Music For Pleasure, who normally concentrated on 'Top Of The Pops' albums - which were hits of the moments recorded by session musicians, but not advertised as such. Sometimes, though, they released albums by the original artists. From memory I think they had a pretty solid down the line 49p price point (albums by 'name' artists were usually in the £2.20 to £2.40 bracket in the early Seventies) so were useful to those with limited pocket money who were prepared to put up with not having the originals.

Looking at the top left of your image I can see a 'Fly Records' logo, think T.Rex left a disintegrating (because of major personnel departures) Fly to sign for EMI at the end of 1972. So, reading between the lines, I can see a desperate record label bereft of their major artist doing a deal with the kings of the Woolies bargain bins and a rare 49p (or maybe a top whack 99p) album by the actual big stars is available to the cash strapped Glam rockers of these islands.

I'll agree that Slade are chronically underated. Great song writers and some stomping tunes and massive licks. Great band. Bit before my time but up there with the v bestof British for me.

I'll nominate Thunder who based on the scene at the time should have been mega, Danny Bowes has one of the best voices in rock, saw them with Ugly Kid Joe, Van Halen and Bonjovi in 1995 as 13 year old, 1st proper gig and they were phenomenal in spite of being the opening act.

Transvision Vamp, (bass player went on to be in Bush) great band and not just because Wendy James was an utter weapon and literally what my dreams are made of, genuinely understand, the 9 min plus that is Velvateen and the album of the same name are top notch

Currently Church of the Cosmic Skull and Robert Jon and The Wreck are both massively under the radar and I can't figure out why.

That's actually incredibly interesting, thanks.

It is definitely T Rex and not session bods like the TOTP franchise.

Noel Gallagher agrees and so do I.

I’d say from that era, these lot too. Snr introduced them too me but I forget how good all the instruments and lyrics are quite often. I think they should have been better remembered given how many bands did similar afterwards.

If you do find the album it might be interesting to post a track listing for us. I have a 'Best of T. Rex' LP that I must have bought when I was sixteen and recall as being relatively cheap, definitely less than a quid. Tracks are:

Side one
Debora
Child Star
Cat Black (The Wizard's Hat)
Conesuala
Strange Orchestras
Find A Little Wood
Once Upon The Seas of Abyssinia

Side Two
One Inch Rock
Salamanda Pataganda
Lofty Skies
Stacey Grove
King of the Rumbling Spires
Blessed Wild Apple Girl
Elemental Child

So, a lot of Tyrannosaurus Rex and Steve Peregrine-Took and just a little of changeover T.Rex and Mickey Flynn, no 'I Love To Boogie' vibes. It was a cash in job but I knew what I was getting and didn't even mind the inclusion of 'One Inch Rock' that was on the eponymous T.Rex album a few months earlier too much. It saved me money I didn't have in buying two or three older albums. But I do wonder what more pop oriented kids who bought the record and expected it to be full of 'Hot Love' etc. made of 'Once Upon the Seas of Abyssinia?

Thanks, so the Music for Pleasure album is the 'Flyback' one omitting 'Find A Little Wood', 'Once Upon The Seas of Abyssinia', 'Blessed Wild Apple Girl' and 'Elemental Child' lopped off and, like the smell of fresh bread wafting out of the sight of fresh fruit by a supermarket entrance, 'Ride A White Swan' tacked on at the start as an enticement.

The first three of those omitted tracks are the most Peregrine-Took Lord of the Rings and London folk scene influenced ones but 'Elemental Child' saw Bolan edging towards Led Zep a bit. And it helps my rusting memory place when I bought 'The Best of T. Rex' as likely to be Spring 1971 because I can remember in final term at Northgate we were allowed to play records one lunchtime a week in a corner of the main hall. Someone was playing that track and I was a bit miffed because I thought I was the only person in the World to have discovered a heavy T. Rex track.
