Probably because they're having to deal with this rubbish

What a state this country is turning into.

Seem to be a lot of protests around at the moment.

A protest about peaceful protests.. becomes violent. 🤦‍♂️At least 4 officers in hospital, some with broken bones and suffering from being struck with fireworks. Police vans set on fire

Yet, I fully expect the police to be the ones criticised for how they handled the baying mob with their anti police agenda and their fireworks and accelerants. No one goes to work to get assaulted

I'm still confused by it all

The 'Vigil' that took place, may have started as a vigil, until more turned up to turn it into an anti police protest... then suddenly the police are in the wrong

I just don't get how these latest 'protests' are anything but criminal acts. they're not protesting anything.

Weird isn’t it? When a government is utterly corrupt, stokes divides and oppresses democratic rights it all kicks off.

Who’d have thunk it?

You wait until the sun comes out. By the end of the summer we will be back to full scale looting and arson to protest against something or other.

If it were a country where we didn’t feel the government was democratic we’d be arming them.

This is what happens when people get fed up.

Spot on.
The right to protest and express yourself is a right enshrined in law.
The new proposals restrict that and give the Home Secretary the ability to decide what protests are lawful or unlawful.

See where this is going?

Yes but they should protest in ways that mean we can keep ignoring them.

Let’s not forget Bristol is the beacon of why Priti wants a fascist state, over a statue last year most gammons never knew existed until it (rightly and long overdue) ended up in the river.

I'm sure that our resident defenders of free speech will be delighted to see the citizenry of this great nation expressing their desire to continue to be able to fully exercise the democratic right to protest.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

Whilst I get all that

I've seen a handful of protests over the last few years, and every single one turns into groups of people turning peaceful protests into a free for all.

Is it any shock that they want to stop this?

The 'handful' you've been aware of, you're aware because it's kicked off.

For every one where it has, there's dozens that didn't.
The 2015 march for public service, for example, attracted 100-150k people. There were 15 arrests.
Compare that to an East Anglian Derby.

So, what is the solution?
Ban any right to protest or public means to hold the government to account?

Shall we get tanks into Trafalgar square?

I lived in a police state 30 years ago. We should all be very wary of what is happening at the moment under this conservative government.

It turned into an anti-police protest for one reason - the actions of the police in breaking it up.

Well im sure having someone setting fire to your car and smashing your windows in, you'd want the police involved no?

Why would they sit back and watch a police station for example get vandalized.

No one has the full facts on catalysts yet. But this has been brewing under the surface arguably for 40 years.

It’s quite blinkered to assume an angry mob occurred out of no where.

We have seen things like this snowball.
It did in US last year...

The more the government tries to crack down, the more people will realise that (unlawful) protest is their only means of being heard. Happened here in the 80s and 90s too.
Add to that, the powder keg of lock down and the appeasement of the far right, as well as a systematic failure of the government and law enforcement to show empathy, we could be in for a very rough summer.

That and all the literal corruption and/or corporate bailouts after us s**tmunchers had to ride out austerity off the back of ANOTHER previous bailout.

The system is failing, arguably it never truly worked to begin with but managed to do enough to make your average middle class citizen feel safe and well off.
