I saw one of the side points was children should be singing the national anthem in school assemblies. This got me thinking about the national anthem more generally. I think the time has come to change it.
"God save our Queen". The premise being twofold. One, that we believe in God. Two, that we agree with the monarchy.
According to latest data*, more than half of the UK don't associate with a religion and this number is reported to be as low as 1% amongst 18-24 year-olds.
A similar pattern of decline is happening in relation to the monarchy**. Support for the monarchy amongst the 65+ is 84%, whereas amongst 18-24 year-olds it is down to 42%.
I don't believe the solution to this is to try and indoctrinate children by introducing the national anthem in schooling. Rather, to use this decline in both areas as a catalyst to change our national anthem to something more reflective of our societies values and making it more future-proof. Something that celebrates the nation, rather than archaic and increasingly irrelevant institutions.
Lord grant that Marshal Wade May by thy mighty aid Victory bring. May he sedition hush, And like a torrent rush, Rebellious Scots to crush. God save the King!
It was added and sung by soldiers in the 18th century during the Jacobite uprising and never was part of the official anthem.
Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?
It's a really awful national anthem. It's just a dirge. You're right that the content hardly touches on things that have universal support amongst UK subjects as well. We need something more unifying.

Never saw the fuss over that song.
Vindaloo for me all day. Great energy, lots of daft fun.
Yeah, not got the enrgy of Vindaloor or even Three Lions for that matter. But I'm with you - Vindaloo has all the oomph and silliness one could hope for in a nation anthem.

It's even about a priest so that should keep the God bothers happy.
Who'll be the lady, who will be the lord When we are ruled by the love of one another Who'll be the lady, who will be the lord In the light that is coming in the morning
Sing, John Ball and tell it to them all And long live the day that is dawning I'll crow like a cock, I'll carol like a lark In the light that is coming in the morning
Eve is the lady, Adam is the lord When we are ruled by the love of one another Eve is the lady, Adam is the lord In the light that is coming in the morning
Sing, John Ball and tell it to them all Long live the day that is dawning I'll crow like a cock, I'll carol like a lark In the light that is coming in the morning

PS: Not suggesting there should be any compulsion for anyone to sing the national anthem and no objection to it being changed (I actually agree with a separation of the church from the state), however I am questioning the rigour of the data quoted.

The sources are provided so they can be challenged and improved upon. I skim read yours and they appear to be from the 2011 census. So it will be great to get a more extensive look at this through the 2021 census. Not sure how long they take to compile. Hopefully quicker, now it is online.
