Stuart Watson says “the targets are ambitious, more so than what people 13:20 - May 13 with 8740 views | TRUE_BLUE123 | Are expecting” Goes on to talk about Waghorn and Rhodes saying “dare I say higher” ... Haaland ? Would I like to keep Downes and Dozzell and Dobra. Yes I would, I think most people do. But this isn’t Paul Hurts territory, Paul Cook has done this at this level. I’m extremely optimistic for next season, so should everyone be. FWIW whether or not we get these players is another thing, but lots of players out of contract, money to be spent. I think Paul Cook clearly has targets that he is confident of getting. Trust the Process guys, trust the process. [Post edited 13 May 2021 13:26]

Perhaps we've had enquiries about Drinan? Better to get a few bob for him. Maybe he's off to Phoenix Rising on loan. Like you say, his retention makes no sense.

It's qualitatively different from what's been said about the rest of the players being discussed. The confusion with Drinan is that it's obvious he's never going to be a first team striker in this division, let alone the one above. Yet, he potentially gets a squad spot and the chance to prove himself whilst we're practically shoving out the door younger players with much more evident ability. |
Evident ability, no evident application until it was too late

At the same time this players with higher quality will be wanting to play week in week out, perhaps Cook can’t offer that but Drinan would purely be a squad player ?

They said on the podcast that they'd be surprised if players like Hawkins and Drinan weren't also told they could leave, they just couldn't be 100% sure and so didn't print it. I imagine Edwards is the same. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Surely the thinking behind giving Edwards a contract was to get a few quid for him.

I don't think that would make a lot of sense (unless they know there's strong interest). We could easily get stuck with him and then we've potenatillly wasted that money. I am a bit confused about the players were seemingly wanting to keep. Maybe the thinking is that they are players who'd better settle for a backup status, or maybe PC just likes their attitude and application and there's nothing more to it than that. It's going to be an interesting summer, that's for sure.

That's not how things work. Edwards can make more money as a free agent than as a transferred player. Why would he accept a new contract so he could be immediately sold? He'd effectively just be giving the club a bunch of money for no reason?

Or guaranteeing himself money in the absense of a contract elsewhere. It's a strange environment out there for all loss making clubs without big backers. I'd say the clubs have a stronger hand now than they've ever had and players need to be very careful. [Post edited 13 May 2021 14:32]

The bizarro logic employed here hurts my brain... So, in the scenario you've cooked up, Edwards, a free agent able to speak other clubs since January, decides to sign a new contract with Ipswich because he's received no other interest. Presumably Edwards skips the part of the conversation where our future plans for him are discussed. We then put him on the transfer list and then suddenly another club, who had not previously shown any interest in Edwards when he was on a free, decides, yes, now we will have to pay a fee for him, we would very much like Gwion Edwards please. Signing new deals or not. Plus I don’t get the Drinan concern. Maybe Cook likes his attitude, he’s going to be 4tg choice. |
Maybe he’s going to convert him to CB
