IF that is true then those four should bring in at least £5m which is still a reasonable return. The U18s obviously did the club proud so the academy looks ok.

You will see how good it is by how many of the FA Youth Cup semi-finalists become first team regulars. Good as they did in the competition, I don’t see many of them coming through. The academy issue is that they produce a similar type of player on a regular basis - skilful but small in stature and lightweight in physicality. Remember, the last academy graduate - aka one of our own - to go for big money was Darren Bent 16 years ago. Doesn’t that say it all?

Elkan Baggott is 6'4, wouldn't exactly call him small in stature. Also you're forgetting Connor Wickham, who is our record sale.

Wickham was only part of our academy because his family moved into the area. Up until U14/15 he was at Reading iirc. A little bit like Rhodes, who only joined us as we gave his dad a job. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

" Would appear this echoes the Marcus Evans timeline of non achievement! I think we'll see the academy receive proper, funding & really thrive under the new ownership. They are very switched on & know you cant just throw silly money at new signings, but building from within incorporates the fans & community spirit, whilst developing playing strength & identity. Its all coming back to how it should be at long last! [Post edited 15 May 2021 20:57]

Yes, you got that spot-on. Wickham senior was in the Army and transferred to Colchester, which led to his son joining Ipswich from Reading, so to claim him as one of our own would not be right.

He joined us when he was younger than Bent was when he was recruited, so think it's slightly spurious to suggest he was less of an academy product. They did actually persuade him to continue playing when he was considering quitting at around 14 because of ongoing growth-related fitness issues.

Where does this leave our Academy. And Klug? on 21:55 - May 15 with 1595 views | franz_tyson | Connor Wickham was sold 10 years ago. We’ve not sold any young players for any significant. money for 10 years. Apart from the likes of Knights , Brown.... and they were years away from our first team. Would it be so bad if Dozzell was sold for decent money? He gets a move to a club where he could fit in and progress his career and we use that money to buy player/s which fit here. It’s all about how good we are in selling/ recruitment . Dyer was sold and we bought 3 players that helped us get promoted.

They might be technically good players but we’ve all come across people who have the skill but not the application. FWIW I think those players fit that description. On the flip side, many of the most successful teams over the years have in them players who technically weren’t the best but whose application made them valuable, the players you mention are all sadly not prepared to be those players based on the evidence of last season.
