Anyone tried Psilocybin (REF: BBC 2, tonight)? 23:31 - May 19 with 4607 viewsThe_Flashing_Smile

I've known and read about this for years. Obviously it's not new - it's the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, which has been known since the 60's.

I didn't make it to the end of the documentary as my laptop died, but it seems fascinating, and well worthy of more research (as opposed to what the big Pharma companies serve you).

I honestly feel like we're at the beginning of a drug revolution that will evolve the human mind, but which governments want to quash (for obvious reasons) and docile and ignorant fools (like chico, sorry but it's true) will eschew because of said governments.

I wish people would wake up before I die.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Spent a lot of my youth at Bagleys, Labyrinth, Dalston Lane was a particular fav of mine, great memories, great times, wouldn't want to do it now though!

Went to Bagleys a fair bit, would also go up to Hacienda now and again as well. Now that was a wild place, always had that air of danger about it!

Used to go Ibiza a fair bit too, those really were the days.

Yeah, not for the people in the documentary it doesn't. This isn't about getting your kicks, it's about the potential for psychedelic substances to treat anxiety and depression.

I see. The replies to the thread didn't suggest that. Seemed more about getting stoned.

Can depression or anxiety be tread with Hallucinogens? If so surely it would have to be moderated?

Once Terry Wogan climbed out of the TV and my fingers extended along the length of the table and dropped over the side.

But that was pretty extreme.

Normally a light pleasant affair akin to mild LSD dosage... brighter colours, tingling, fuzziness.

Good as tea.

The evidence from the documentary suggests that it can be a highly effective treatment. It was following a controlled double blind trial using the active ingredient from magic mushrooms and was in no way promoting recreational use.

'In 1990, however, Rick Strassman, a psychiatrist at the University of New Mexico, obtained permission from federal authorities to inject DMT into human volunteers. Strassman, a Buddhist, suspected that endogenous DMT might contribute to mystical experiences. From 1990 to 1995, he supervised more than 400 DMT sessions involving 60 subjects at the University of New Mexico. Many subjects reported that they dissolved blissfully into a radiant light or sensed the presence of a powerful, god-like being.

On the other hand, 25 subjects underwent what Strassman called “adverse effects,” including terrifying hallucinations of “aliens” that took the shape of robots, insects or reptiles. Some subjects remained convinced that these aliens were real in spite of Strassman’s efforts to convince them otherwise.'

Sounds like a poorly conducted trial with a somewhat flimsy premise. Worlds apart from what was being done in the documentary.

The premise for using DMT to gauge reactions was that it is the only psychedelic so far identified as naturally occurring in the body - perhaps responsible for Glassers' 'natural highs'.

One of the best experiences of my life is owed in large part to mushrooms. Travelling and camping with friends through Europe and stumbling across a rave in a forest near Konstanz.

The first time I ever dabbled I was sat by a big lake in a local park back home, bathed in sun in the company of good friends. I'll always remember us all saying 'not much is happening and 'I think these are duds'. All of a sudden a bloody great dog comes running past and it's so big it sort of looks and sounds like a horse in full gallop. All of us just start laughing uncontrollably and the good times begin.

I didn't try acid until a little bit later but I've always been lucky with both and never really had any bad times. I think the key is being with people you trust as much as anything else. I'll definitely be watching this documentary later, cheers!

That last paragraph from what I've been told is key - make sure you're with people you completely trust. A mate of my OH is a lovely bloke but too trusting/naive and apparently as teenagers some of the group completely f***ed with him on purpose while they were tripping and he's never been right since, suffers from anxiety, paranoia etc.

Personally the thought of taking anything mind altering just sounds terrifying, I've had hallucinations when I had flu once and the idea people pay for that just seems madness to me.

They are doing trials with MDMA around how it can treat depression.

I can never understand why someone would do that to a person. Like you say, it can have long-lasting, deep-seated consequence and to be honest constitutes abuse.

My friends from home growing up and my housemates from uni were very different in a lot of ways but both were such tight-knit groups that I never really feared that sort of thing and it certainly never crossed my mind.

Obviously a lot of the replies here are more about getting high than any kind of therapeutic aspect, but I think many of us who have dabbled would say that we've felt some sort of therapeutic effect or benefit. Portrayals of psychedelics in the media also tend to be wildly inaccurate which is something to bear in mind. That being said, if your gut instinct is to avoid mind altering substances, then avoiding them is definitely the right course of action!

Tried mushrooms when I was 17/18, and most of the time it was a laugh, until something freaked me out then would go the opposite way.

Remember sitting in Mannings with my pint of Guinness and it looked like a lake with ice over it and seals jumping round the glass. Then went to some party in the pub that used to be near Portman Road (Sporting Farmer?) and the patterns on the toilet carpet tried to eat me and the loo roll holder tried to eat my arm!

Also amusingly at the time - me and a friend had just taken some and her posh Aunt came in and we were in hysterics, as the Asda advert had come on the telly "one trip and you're laughing"! Think we laughed for about 2 hours because of that alone.

Would not touch them now,too many mental health problems, so too much of a risk for me.
