I was listening to a Grimsby Town podcast 20:52 - May 23 with 3080 views | Hipsterectomy | which was summarising their awful season. Pretty much all of the blame was laid at Holloway who didn't seem to care about the club yet had complete control of it. What I found interesting was they didn't seem to think Paul Hurst was a managerial coup for them, just that he merely suits where they are right now as a battling League 2/promotion chasing Conference team. They didn't seem to rate him as a good manager, just that he has done an admirable job trying to keep them up. How the Hell did we end up with him? What made him think he was coming in to easily improve on mid-table finishes? When Grimsby Town fans' opinion is "he's fine at this level".

I was listening to a Grimsby Town podcast on 21:03 - May 23 with 2946 views | catch74 | I think ME always looked for managers with a history of achieving promotion. I’m not sure how much further he looked than that. I’m wondering though, how many teams have achieved anything re-forming their squad around players that have been successful from the league below. I think Bart is the real barometer for Hurst. I’m not saying it’s all based on Bart but Millwall have been punching since they’ve had him and guess what he’s their player of the season again. I feel anger about Hurst, pity for Lambert, he really was pitiful.

I was listening to a Grimsby Town podcast on 21:15 - May 23 with 2863 views | tractorboy1978 | I think there is a lot of revisionism that goes on with Hurst. He'd managed 500 odd games before he came here with an average win % of 50% odd across the four clubs he had been with. He took a Shrewsbury side that was genuine relegation fodder when he joined and had them 1 game away from the Championship. At the time the fans were pining for a young up and coming manager and his CV was extremely impressive. [Post edited 23 May 2021 21:16]

There’s both now - people saying we should never have given him the job, and then massive revisionism for his spell here because he said players had it easy or some such rubbish. He looked on paper a decent appointment; but he turned out to be a disastrous one who did untold damage with his transfer dealings and treatment of 2 players who were returning from the World Cup which just destroyed their value

It’s quite saddening in a way. He came here with a burgeoning reputation as someone who built clubs up and left them in a better place than where he found them. He then screwed that up here through a mix of bad man-management and even worse decision making. The only way he’ll ever manage at Championship level again is if he gets a team promoted back there and he looks a million miles away from that now.
I was listening to a Grimsby Town podcast on 23:14 - May 23 with 2305 views | chrismakin | A large section of the fan base were screaming out for a young upcoming manager who hadnt already been there done that but could come in with fresh eyes. Fresh ideas and take town forward as they continue their progress up the leagues. Hurst on paper was that manager. Problem is. The championship is hard enough when you dint compete with other budgets, but add in a manager with 0 experience of the level and 0 experience in knowing exactly what qualities players would need to compete at that level and you're asking for trouble.

We all know what happened with Bart but what was his treatment of Knudsen?

Wasnt it a case of Knudsen being honest and saying he didnt want a new contract at the end of the season so Hurst basically said fine. Go train with the u23s

JK given extra time off after World Cup, before Hurst had even spoken to him had said to press along lines of I don’t care what he’s done before, don’t care he’s been to World Cup he needs to come in and prove himself to me. Just more expert man management that got his back right up and ensured we lost a well rated international on a free transfer

I was listening to a Grimsby Town podcast on 09:52 - May 24 with 1562 views | BlueBlood90 | I'm from Grimsby and a regular down at Blundell Park. I've posted about the local opinion of Hurst up here a few weeks ago. I never rated him in his first stint as manager at Grimsby and knew how badly he'd do at Ipswich. I got a shed load of abuse on here for slating his appointment because he'd just won manager of the year in League One prior to his appointment! Ian Holloway is despised here for this seasons debacle but Grimsby were 6 points clear of the relegation zone when Hurst was appointed in December and he had five months to turn things around but took us to certain relegation instead. Somehow he's got the full backing of everybody here. Quite bizarre.

I think a lot of Shrewsbury's improvement had to do with some pretty good players they secured on loan that season rather than Hurst's ability. One example being Ben Godfrey

At the time, many Town fans backed the signing of Hurst, and the message to the club was that we wanted a young, hungry manager with the drive to make a name for himself. So I really can't fault Evans' decision to hire him. However, what I can and do fault Evans for is the seemingly unrestricted freedom that he gave him in the transfer window. Evans should have had someone advising him against the fees on the table for the players we bought and the liability in selling all strong players with the replacements being totally unproven at this level.
