Who cuts the grass on a Sunday 08:39 - May 30 with 6197 viewsBlueBlueBluex2

08:30 on a BH Sunday morning and I can hear someone in my village cutting the grass.

Is there some old law which means I can hit him with a pitchfork?

That looks interesting cheers. Must admit I hadn't looked into it, but I've spent plenty of effort already moss killing, raking, scarifying. So £30 to guarantee a job well done would be well worth it. (although I'd probably need 3 lol, but still cheaper than all the seeds, fertiliser, etc).

All that work - better to learn to love a moss lawn! Beaut lush green, wonderful natural eco-system, no mowing or any other input required!!

Btw *do not* sow lawn seed now in blazing sun & heat, with no prospect of rain - it'll dislike those conditions intensely, and likelihood of it germinating & "taking" will be greatly reduced. Better to wait till conditions are cooler and more humid - it'll love that.

Yeah, I did wonder. The birds would love the moss for nests too. Too late now, it's all gone.

I've just missed a great window for seeding - what's left of the grass has gone nuts in the wetter weather of the last few weeks. Maybe I'll leave it and just sit in the sun with a cold drink - sounds far more preferable!

Don't beat yourself up, if you live in the UK it's clearly perfectly sensible & reasonable to expect the end of May Bank Hol to be wet & cold

Agree that it's bad form on a Sunday.

It also feels people wait for one to finish before starting up their own to ensure the noise is continuous.

Maybe there could be an hour slot or something where everyone just gets it out of the way in one go.

The correct answer is of course that you should both have been at church, particularly as today is the saint's day for Ferdinand III of Castile.

I'd forgotten about him.

You didn't put up a remembrance thing for him did you?

A grass snake has just gone head-to-head with my lawnmower and lost.

Traumatic business. I’m going to have a good sit down to recover.

Did same with a strimmer before....horrid.

My neighbour's just started up his ancient petrol mower which sounds like a Jumbo jet & smells like a 1950s Morris Minor, & is going at it for the **4th** flamin day in a row. What is it with men & machines?!

There is no good time, I cut my back lawn a while back at about 8pm, when I'd finished the neighbour at the back shouted something about it being a bit late, I didn't respond, I don't know them...took it on board though to be fair..

It should just be common sense shouldn't it.

I mean, if your next door neighbour is hosting a bbq and/or has a wide screen TV with the World Cup on then it's probably not polite to start cutting the grass etc.

Yet, I've seen it happen.

I would not want to disturb my neighbours, that’s the only reason.

Sunday is fine, just don’t be an arsehole and do it before 9:30.

Many years ago when I was in Germany, you were not allowed to mow your lawn on a Sunday

Genuinely don't understand the Sunday thing. Is it a hangover or a religious thing?

I am a little old fashioned. I would not consider cutting my grass on a Sunday (or a BH Monday of course) but I appreciate that people do not always time in the week.

Would not mind but the chap doing it is retired....

I used to have the same opinion of the retired people who would wait until early Saturday morning to go shopping in the supermarket at the busiest time of the week and just stand around chatting to anyone……. FFS if you don’t work all week then do your chores then and not when the rest of us are

Maybe they should have a special time in the supermarkets for workers. Show your wage slip or you don't get in. A sort of opposite of the "OAP hour" some supermarkets introduced last summer.

Old fashioned courtesy. Seems to be going out of the window these days which is a shame.

With due respect, you've not answered/explained why you think it discourteous to cut your lawn on a Sunday?

Aside from religous considerations or people sleeping off a hangover, am not understanding the issue.

Not for people who are either religious or were brought up in religious households and where old habits die hard. My inlaws do diddly squat all on a Sunday out of principle. It's actually quite nice to have a down tools day - I'm envious, but we're always running around chasing our tails so I need every day of the week I can get.

It’s like the post office used to be at lunchtime on pension day. I’ve been very close to screaming ‘WTF are you doing here now?!’ a few times as Enid and Beryl caught up on all the gossip since they last met back in the distant past of yesterday evening at their Darby and Joan club.

No need for it at all.

No other reason than for the majority it's a main day off.

Speaking as someone who worked weekends for 30 years it has never made much difference to me, but I understand others spend time together with families and friends or might need a bit of peace away from loud machinery.

I would never consider getting home on a weekend and starting up a petrol mower etc.

I was half-joking about the seemingly deliberate pattern of one after another but it can seem that way sometimes. You know, you're relieved when one stops and then another starts up from another location and so forth.

Sure, why not have a day when that's not happening?
