The BBC license fee on 00:32 - Jun 5 by Enigma_Blue | Defunding the BBC doesn't mean abolishing the BBC. It means let it fund itself, like ITV does through commercial revenue. And how the frig you have left Only Fools & Horses, arguably the greatest British sitcom of all time off your list! [Post edited 5 Jun 2021 0:34]

I think the point is, if the BBC was funded the same way as ITV lots of this amazing content would never have been made.

The moral of the story.....always bring antibiotics home from trips abroad.

But then it’s in thrall to the market and stops being independent, which is the whole point of the BBC.

Re funding: the culture and departmental structure of the "uniquely funded" BBC created the conditions in which these programmes were commissioned and made. The BBCs charter includes the Reithian formula "to inform, educate and entertain" and this list reflects that. The question is "Without the Licence Fee, how many of these programmes would have been made?" And we should also add anything Channel 4 have made, as it was set up with the BBC as a major partner. So how the feck have I left off Father Ted, arguably the greatest Irish sitcom of all time? Re Only Fools and Horses: I'd mistakenly thought that it started around 1979, so hadn't included it. It's covered by "and add your own", though. Or to put it another way: "Because I'm a plonker, Rodney."

There are seven sitcoms on that list that effortlessly show up 'Only Fools and Horses' as second rate.

Only Fools... second rate? Didn't think we'd ever fall out again after the whole battenberk saga but this is it, buddy. How very dare you...

Yeah, that's a terrible shout. Can't say I'd be in a rush to watch Fools these days but of its time it's a stone cold classic.

I did find the scene where David Jason falls through the gap where the barmaid has just lifted the flap on the bar amusing if that is any comfort to you. It probably has one or two other 'moments' but I can't recall them offhand. And that theme tune - worst evah.

I mean, at least 'Dad's Army' had a couple of series of genuine comic talent showing through before the telegraphed set-ups took over.

The BBC license fee on 10:11 - Jun 5 with 575 views | DebsyAngel | For me it's EastEnders, Casualty, Pointless, The Hit List, Match Of The Day and MOTD2, a lot of the BBC4 music documentaries and old Top of the Pops. For the radio, Ken Bruce (Popmaster section), Sounds of the 80s, and Pick of the Pops and away match commentary on Radio Suffolk. [Post edited 5 Jun 2021 10:31]

Whilst I don't want to "pile in" it has to be said that there were quite a few BBC/C4 sitcoms that were funnier than Only Fools and Horses: Ab Fab Blackadder Drop the Dead Donkey Father Ted Fawlty Towers Hancock's Half Hour Porridge Steptoe and Son The League of Gentlemen Till Death Do Us Part Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister

The BBC license fee on 10:22 - Jun 5 by WeWereZombies | What was that other one with the predictable storylines and hackneyed stereotypical characters, think it was set in the Midlands, 'Last of the Summer Wine'? |
Watched an episode of that with grandad footers yesterday... Compo's funeral. I had no idea he'd had a secret Thursday girl throughout the programme - and he was certainly punching. But any one without the proper Foggy is not true Last of the Summer Wine. It's nice though, very gentle. Not like the filth they show these days.

At least 'Fawlty Towers' and 'Hancock's Half Hour' had the decency to realise they were duff and gave up after a few episodes...
