What a shame then that, for whatever reason, the photos & vids of the "policing outside" showed a complete absence of Met Police officers amongst or near the crowds of drunk, rampaging thugs smashing bottles etc on the roads leading to the stadium.

As I said on another thread, they had no problem turning up in numbers a few months ago to roughly manhandle & drag away women holding a peaceful vigil in memory of someone murdered by a member of the Met Police ...

Deputy Assistant Commissioner, Laurence Taylor said the police "did not lose control at any point".

I guess if you didn't have control in the first place, you cant lose it.

Sounds like Wembley was understaffed and under-policed.

Uk & Ireland bid for 2030 World Cup could be damaged.

And as it stands, I hope we don't win any bid, we don't deserve it.

Sadly agree - they'd just hugely and globally embarrass us - if it were possible for us as a nation to be any more embarrassing than we are right now

Agree, as much as I hate FIFA the corrupt institution they are, they should stay well clear of us regarding hosting world cup...and fortunately i think they will.

Our thugs will have to set off on their travels again and embarrass us abroad instead.

I hope some of them go to Qatar, they don't tend to be very lenient over there, and a few public floggings for our hoolies may bang some sense into them!

This is literally laughable. There were 10 policeman on the stairs to Wembley and 10s of thousands with and without tickets trying to get up them. The covid and ticket check failed from being overwhelmed and everyone flooded to the turnstiles.

They cannot gaslight their way out of this.

We should be nowhere near hosting anything football related. Wembley and our society both need a root and branch review. Uefa are not blameless. €295 for a category 3 ticket and they can't even staff it properly. The 8pm kick off was entirely unnecessary too.

Well, we can host Cricket, Rugby, Athletics, Tennis without any issue, in fact it's a brilliant experience for everyone.

Football is light years behind, which is a shame as we have the infrastructure, but we still have a huge problem which I thought we had left behind in the 80's.

So sad.

I've never been anti-police and appreciate the MET Police have an incredibly difficult job.

However recent events over the last few years and the statements that then come out from top brass are beginning to show them as not fit for purpose.

How is Cressida Dick still in her role, is it because she is a gay woman and ticks the diversity boxes. Because the MET performance under her stewardship is quite frankly at new levels of incompetence and embarrassing for this country. She needs axing immediately and a thorough overhaul of the MET conducted.

I've not read the link, so apologies if this is mentioned, but doesn't it come down to costing? Didn't Wembley or the FA not want to pay for policing inside the ground and that's where the problem really lies, not that the police couldn't be bothered to turn up? The fact there was meant to be 30,000 empty seats for the biggest game for England in 55 years and the huge price of tickets it was always going to ask for trouble and encourage opportunists. To me, it looked like the stadium was almost full by kick off. Relying on teenagers or undertrained stewards to manage that chaos was a poor oversight by our footballing governing body and the stadium officials.

That's more the point, they didn't want to pay for the extra policing inside the stadium and that's the real issue. I know hindsight is a wonderful thing, but that really was short-sighted on their part thinking something like this wasn't going to happen with the enormity of the game. The FA or Wembley are the ones that are responsible for this carnage. It really has left a bad taste in the mouth for an occasion that was meant to be one to be celebrated not tarnished in this manner.

There is a feeling in Ireland that we dodged a bullet when we lost the staging of matches due to Covid-19 restrictions and FIFAs requirement for crowds ( England Vs Germany was supposed to be played in Dublin ).

Not sure police would have been required inside the ground had they done there job outside of it?

And I dont mean the frontline police, but those that put the strategic planning in place.

Hard job and always easy to say in hindsight, but this could have been avoided.

the police we were chatting with on WW simply said they knew this was going to go tits up with the lack of numbers on that day, they said they'd need 3 times what they had, and when I asked how the hell they were suppose to deal with anything if it kicked off, he just laughed "no idea mate, we could go in and get smacked with bottles, but i'm not sure I have the equipment to fancy that"

The videos of the idiots in and around Wembley on Sunday, along with all the racist stuff going on against those three young players have really sickened me and wiped away all the optimism I had following the great performances the team put in over the last three weeks!

Yes Police, Wembley and UEFA could have put more in place to prevent it happening…but I find it so embarrassing as a Nation that our Team attracts this chav, moronic so called ‘support’!!!

Part of the issue is the fact that the number of police on the streets have been cut dramatically over the years due to cuts in public spending. If we were to be successful in any bid to hold the world cup I would imagine 3rd party companies would be brought in like they did for the 2012 Olympics to help with stewarding they would also likely use the military to bolster the security around venues.

Do banning orders still apply to England games and are they enforced anymore?

Pretty sure that would have stopped a fair few there without tickets, having to pop to there local police station at say 20:00.

away games they would have had to, so the away game for 1/4's they'd have needed to sign in the local police stations between 16:00-20:00

home games, doesn't apply

plus it was young chavs, not full on football hooligans

This wasn't old school hoolies. These were youngsters and opportunists. Some in their teens.

As Texters said, the police were a fifth or maybe less of the required number to keep things in line. Also and fundamentally there was just too many people on Wembley Way. Easily over 100k. Should have been a dispersal order for unticketed fans given we remain in a pandemic to boot. Sounds ridiculously obvious writing that.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

It may have changed by now but I worked at the old Wembley in the burger stalls a couple of times. Most of the staff back then were students/minimum wagers from an agency who were chucked in with zero experience of working at a football match, most of them had never been to one.
