Kenlock new team? 10:56 - Jul 19 with 4557 views | kizaitfc | Very surprised he hasn't found a new club, left backs are generally one of the most sought after players. Not saying he is the best player but with championship experience I would have thought a couple of League 1 clubs would have looked at him even if it were just as a backup. Has there been any links with him? Is he going to end up a Col U maybe?

Kenlock new team? on 18:50 - Jul 19 by MattinLondon | Kenlock isn’t the greatest full-back in ITFC history but he certainly isn’t the worst. Think people have forgotten that when he came back into the team after a time out he looked like quite a good attacking left-back (at this level). Maybe he simply needs a fresh start somewhere. |
No, that’s Damian Delaney. But Damian aside, Myles is in the conversation.

Kenlock new team? on 19:41 - Jul 19 by jayessess | He was a perfectly adequate left back in a mid-table League One team last season. Actually, our record with him starting was a bit better than that even, 9 wins/5 draws/3 defeats, which is more or less promotion form. What a footballer is good at is very subjective, so I'm not sure it's worthwhile trying to persuade you on that front. But, just objectively, surely you can see that players of Kenlock's profile (24, fair few league appearances, good injury record, putting in reasonably competent performances last season), don't usually end up in non-league? There are 39 league clubs with teams who were worse than the one Kenlock formed a part of, after all. You don't actually have to rate Kenlock very highly for the above to be true. Just have a sense of reality about footballers and their careers! Other than semi-retirements, how many players have been ended up playing non-league the season after starting 15 games for Ipswich Town? If it's more than zero I'd be surprised. Danny Haynes ended up in non league not many years after leaving us. Jaime Peters seemed to vanish off the face of the earth. Owen Garvans career fell off a cliff after having a good spell at Palace after us. Ian Westlake won a player of the Season for us and look what happened to him. Probably plenty of others in a similar boat who I can’t think of off the top of my head. They might not exactly fit your criteria but they are players who I’d wager the vast majority of town fans would have rated higher than Kenlock, played a lot of games for us, and most would have expected to have a decent career after us. Given what happened to their careers it’s not as inconceivable as you make out that it will happen to Kenlock. You may well be right and somebody might take a punt on him given his experience and think he’d do a job but I don’t think he has the attributes to have a career above non league much longer and I’m surprised he’s lasted as long as he has here.

Danny Haynes? 4 seasons in the Championship followed by 4 more in League 1/Championship/Scottish Premiership? That Danny Haynes? Jaime Peters? The Jaime Peters who played 0 matches for Town the season before he left? Not sure if it was injuries, lack of ability or what but still doesn't match up. Owen Garvan? The Owen Garvan that spent 5 seasons in the Championship and Premier League straight after leaving us? Ian Westlake? The Same Ian Westlake who left for Leeds also in the Championship and then continued to play at League 1 level for 4 years after that? Your data to support your case blows your own theory sky high!

Feel like NthSuffolkBlue answered this one for me, really. None of those players even vaguely fit my criteria, three of them played 100 games in the football league after leaving us, Garvan's career actually peaked after leaving! I just don't get why people feel the need to have such exaggerated opinions about players. That Kenlock won't ultimately have a long career in the football league is a perfectly reasonable opinion you can agree with or disagree with. That it would be "surprising" if he could find another league club to play for this season is just objectively untrue.

Yes, for a spell last year (around Jan/Feb I think) he was our best player, setting up goals and marauding down the left. From what I've seen of him, it seems like when he has confidence in his own ability he's really effective, but he doesn't play at near to his 'best' level often enough. Could go either way - if he goes somewhere with a manager who puts faith in him and gives him that confidence then he could be a really key player at League One level, but if he doesn't get that kind of manager then his career might drift.

I think he should play Left Midfield in a traditional 442. He did have a good spell, but the criticism I remember people making on here was how often he got caught out of position after an attack. So he has the attacking inclination, but not the pace to play Wing Back or Attacking Full Back. My perception is that his strength is ball retention: he is tidy in possession and doesn't give the ball away as much as other ITFC defenders have in recent seasons. Play him Left Midfield in a 442 at lower League level and I reckon he will be fine. To deviate the thread: The one I don't get is Tristam Nydam. He has always looked a class above his peers to me. Cook was really positive about his attitude coming back from injury. If any of them earned a chance it was him.

And yet our defensive record with him in the team last year wasn't noticeably bad? In fact, he played in probably our most accomplished defensive performance last year, the 1-0 win over Hull. Realistically pushing your full backs on is always a bit of a risk because you're always going to be one bad turnover away from potentially getting exposed, no matter how fast your full back is. It's a risk you accept because it helps you pin the other team in their half. Nydam, I'm sure there's more to the story than we heard, because in light of all the things we heard about him before he was released I can't understand why we didn't offer him a further year and why we haven't heard about him going on trial or interesting anyone. Got injured again? Wants first team football he won't get at Town?

I didn’t say it would be ‘surprising’ as in for the general football fan. I said “I’d be surprised” which I would given my personal take on him. Doesn’t mean my personal opinion is what everyone thinks. You clearly disagree which is fine. If you’re going to get hung up on one word though, you should probably use a word I actually said! For the record I have nothing against him and if he gets a new club in the league fair play to him. If he rips it up for somebody I have no issue admitting I was wrong. I just think non league is where he will end up whether it be now or a few years time.

Contract expires in 12 months. I don't imagine the terms were particularly generous given the context.

Kenlock new team? on 12:33 - Jul 20 with 943 views | wkj | Some odd comments about Kenlock on this thread. Why on earth would he not be a league footballer? He was one of the few players who improved last season. He put in some adequate displays. Yes, he has to up his game to be part of a promotion-chasing team. His best last year needs to be his worse this year if he stays, but he's not below the standard of the football league structure. There are many reasons why a player does or does not move on, and lack of interest is not an all encompassing one.

I think Nydam has had a big set back with injury, another operation. May be that his best move is to take the insurance pay out and drop into the non leagues sadly

If that is the case then that is very sad. It's a cruel business, sometimes. Similar happened to Aidan Collins who was the rock at the heart of the 2005 FA Youth Cup winning team. I thought he was very, very good, too. (Maybe I should stop thinking ITFC youth players are good?!?) I always felt very sorry for Dean Ashton, in spite of his budginess, because he was a very good player who just had everything taken from him.
