If we really value our NHS then this sort of rhetoric needs to meet the full force of the law and public opinion.

WARNING vile Covid opinions within on 05:52 - Jul 25 by Ryorry | I'm afraid it does all remind me rather horribly of scenes and conditions in 1930s Germany. It becomes easier to manipulate & brainwash people when they are desperate & scared. By contrast, saw on BBC2 last night part of Pavarotti in the Park (edit: from July 1991) including Nessun Dorma, which in turn reminded me of the 1990 World Cup, which then reminded me of the summer of 2012 & London Olympics. What we had, what we've lost - makes you weep. [Post edited 25 Jul 2021 13:11]

It's scary isn't it? It genuinely feels like you're watching it all fall apart. It's so hard to discern what sort of percentage of people this mob actually represents, but they just seem to get more vocal, more outrageous and more dangerous. Seeing a crowd like that cheering along to fascist rhetoric about the Nuremburg trials makes you scared about where this goes next. What happens if they keep multiplying? Who else is on their agenda? They've been figures of ridicule until now, but now they must be figures of fear. How long is it before we start seeing these nutters turning up at hospitals in numbers, purely with the mindset to intimidate, disrupt and endanger? Turns your stomach thinking about it.

They were relatively harmless cranks until significant numbers of people started believing in them (same with QAnon, which possibly started as a joke on an internet forum). It's a more important question as to how that happened. Bereft of all the old certainties (trust in the authorities, books, religion, ideologies) and awash in a sea of unfiltered and unverified information, lacking the intellectual training* to handle that and coddled in a fug of overwrought TV disaster dramas and angry soap operas, people just can't cope and don't know how to react. This combined with modern individualism, where my opinions and impressions are as valid as anybody else's facts, leads to a situation where people basing their understanding of the world upon raw internet sewage, just picking what to them seem the most plausible lumps as they float past. * This is not an implication of stupidity, just lack of training in a world where schools and universities have become a cross between exam-passing machines (to climb the league tables) and creches to keep the young off the dole as long as possible. No slight on the teachers, either, this is at government policy level.

That's kind of my point, it's hard to know what percentage of people these cretins make up. I suspect the numbers have risen recently, but no idea by how much. They seem more prominent because of all the technological advances we have made. I would imagine they are still a very small minority but the longer things go on, the more their popularity will rise.

"in a sea of unfiltered and unverified information, lacking the intellectual training to handle that" the main tool that normally allows people if handle complexity is trust. - 'i may not be able to work out an answer from first principles but I trust those who have done so already and have established the current consensus'. but we are in a period when events and politics on all sides are acting to undermine trust. all exaggerated and magnified by social media. a political culture in which extreme accusations get routinely thrown about may give a short-term hit on a political opponent but in the longer-term it's corrosive and gives nutters like those in the op space to operate. Indeed. Moreover, undermining trust is a quick and easy way to gain influence, for those who cannot out-argue experts/authorities on their own terms. Additionally, the fact that corruption and incompetence is more easily exposed and publicised nowadays - and yet people are still stupid enough to do them - corrodes trust. Now we have got to the point where the electorate so expects politicians to be dodgy and shambolic that they no longer care when they are shown to be.

Absolutely agree with all that. I'd rather have widespread, dogmatic religion back in this country than where we seem to be going now, and I really don't like dogmatic religions. Perhaps the blunt truth is that when they look at the naked realities of both our societal and environmental situations (both fundamentally driven by fear, individualistic greed and ever increasing growth), most people need some sort of fantasy to believe in, and this sort of crap is as powerful a vehicle as anything else. We are a terribly flawed species, and an inability to face the blindingly obvious limits which we need to set ourselves, has almost certainly doomed us on many levels. It's no good bleating about trivialities when the world is on fire.

yes the corrosion seems to be cumulative and self-reinforcing. there is nothing in public policy that isn't open to legitimate challenge, criticism and debate. but social media magnifies negatives and too often presents disagreements as incompetence or corruption rather than legitimate debate. we're losing the ability to recognise and reflect consensus in policy and we're exaggerating the volume and significance of stuff at the extremes. we're losing the ability to see the importance of the stuff we agree on. we have a culture which currently emphasises division over trust. it's the perfect primordial soup for nutters.
