Absolutely agree with all that. I'd rather have widespread, dogmatic religion back in this country than where we seem to be going now, and I really don't like dogmatic religions.
Perhaps the blunt truth is that when they look at the naked realities of both our societal and environmental situations (both fundamentally driven by fear, individualistic greed and ever increasing growth), most people need some sort of fantasy to believe in, and this sort of crap is as powerful a vehicle as anything else.
We are a terribly flawed species, and an inability to face the blindingly obvious limits which we need to set ourselves, has almost certainly doomed us on many levels. It's no good bleating about trivialities when the world is on fire. |
Even as a person of faith, I don't think dogmatic religion (or dogmatic anything else) is particularly the answer. It doesn't have an unblemished record itself. Arguably, we used to have too much trust in authority, leading to wars and situations of systemic abuse.
In the period centered upon the late 1960s, there was a great hope that mankind was becoming more enlightened and could move away from excessive deference into a more responsible, mutually caring society. However, that collapsed into disillusionment and the 1980s "greed is good" reaction.
It's a cycle we've been through before - the renewed postwar hope of the 1920s falling into the Great Depression, extremism and the build-up to another major conflict. The mid-19th century liberal, social and scientific movements descending into nationalism and, eventually, 1914.
Humanity does not seem to find it easy to evolve mentally at the speed of societal and technological changes. |  |

They were relatively harmless cranks until significant numbers of people started believing in them (same with QAnon, which possibly started as a joke on an internet forum). It's a more important question as to how that happened.
Bereft of all the old certainties (trust in the authorities, books, religion, ideologies) and awash in a sea of unfiltered and unverified information, lacking the intellectual training* to handle that and coddled in a fug of overwrought TV disaster dramas and angry soap operas, people just can't cope and don't know how to react.
This combined with modern individualism, where my opinions and impressions are as valid as anybody else's facts, leads to a situation where people basing their understanding of the world upon raw internet sewage, just picking what to them seem the most plausible lumps as they float past.
* This is not an implication of stupidity, just lack of training in a world where schools and universities have become a cross between exam-passing machines (to climb the league tables) and creches to keep the young off the dole as long as possible. No slight on the teachers, either, this is at government policy level. |
You can probably throw in the seeming endorsement of fringe ideas through false equivalency and ‘two siding’ issues too. Even our national broadcaster has created non-existent ‘debates’ and given equal time to climate change deniers in media pieces on climate change. | |

The problem is no proof is good enough for these people. You see it in magic, in these mystical martial arts types etc. They get completely exposed and their brains just can't handle the reality of it so they spiral further.
If she has, or indeed does have mental health problems as was suggested previously then I apologise if my OP was a tad strong. However, it'd align further with the idea that confirmation bias is all they want. | |

Her son was on Stephen Nolan’s show on R5 this evening. She’s clearly unhinged and he described a very odd upbringing, it was only when he hit 16 and mixed more that he realised that most other people didn’t believe the bull he’d been fed as a kid and logic defeated it all. |  |
