Anyone a cup purist still and wants Cook to go full strength? 09:01 - Nov 6 with 1710 viewsMullet

It is a shame the cup is no longer that special, maybe it’s a generational thing, but I’d be quite happy to see a Papa John’s side today and let the key players rest a while.

The league is always all important, especially with ground to make up, so for me I’d rather build up the outer edges of the squad from the bench this week in case they’re needed for the slog ahead.

Anyone still believe we should play our strongest team, or did we lose that idea since relegation?

Full strength today, fringe players on Tuesday.

Pretty much on board with this though starting Pigott, Harper and Aluko wouldn't be out of the way I don't think (so resting Bonne, Celina ? and Evans/Morsy ?).

A bench made up with a view to resting some of the other 8 should the game allow.

Then as you say a complete revamp on Tuesday.

As somebody who went to Wembley as young teen when we won the cup, I'd consider myself a purist.

However, we have a very strong squad with our second string being players who would expect to start for any other league one club. And they are in need of competitive football.

So I would play:

Hladký
Donacien
Burgess
Woolfenden
Penney
El Mizouni
Harper
Aluko
Barry
Fraser
Pigott

and still expect to win comfortably.

Agree with that. Particularly want to see Harper starting.

Mullet - I think the FA Cup as it is a Saturday, with rest around it, is a chance to give our full B-11 a good work out... so the likes of Hdalky, Wolf, Burgess, now Penney (if Coulson injury not bad), El Miz, Harper, Fraser, Chaplin and Piggot.

Then Tueday for Pizza cup go B-B-team and youngsters so get Jackson, Norwood, and all those youngsters whos names I forget

Deep down I’d love to see us give it a go, but just know it won’t happen and can’t blame Cook or anyone at the club for that.

If we make 11 changes we should have enough about us to beat them today, but often ends up not being the case

Preston, Lincoln, Portsmouth. All games we put out a weakened team good enough to win, all ended up with replays, long journey on a Tuesday night and defeat.

Just win the game.

Outside of Xmas and Easter there are only 4 midweek games remaining. That would increase with an FA Cup run to the 3rd round, but not too significantly.

The Pizza cup I couldn't care less about.

Would like to see a strong team to keep momentum and team building. Would like to see him keep the same back four - it’s so important that they get as much game time together as possible, and Morsey, simply because he’s our captain and important talisman that all the players look to.

Our squad has more depth now than it has in an age with like-for-like players able to slot in. Rotation can be justified now; it was hard to make a case for it at times under Lambert and Mick and proved to be detrimental on more than one occasion.

Even in those times you have the element of having to keep fringe players happy with their roles at the club so that they aren’t just wanting out when you may need them down the line.

The team we put out vs Newport, and West Ham U21s, Was heavily rotated and easily good enough to win but just doesn’t seem to work like that

We’ve got a match on Tuesday to give our B-11 a good run out - Oldham and Colchester are much of a muchness. Get this game won and keep the players match fit, rather than having a ten day break between Wycombe and Oxford.

Seems a bit over-strong to me. Town may have deeper strength in depth than other league 1 clubs, but would El Mizouni, for example, really 'expect' to get into the Doncaster or Wigan first XI?

Might be tempted to give Rekeem Harper 90 minutes as a 10, if that's where he's going to be playing from now on

Though of course El Mizouni is there because Carroll is missing. I’d argue our full strength B-11 would be a first XI for most League One sides.

Can't disagree with that. (But it's not the same as saying these are players "who would expect to start for any other league one club".)

(And I apologise, in my earlier post I meant Rotherham rather than Doncaster - which is significantly different!)

I dont think its about being a cup purist at this stage, its an opportunity for another 90mins in a competitive game that the team can hone their "gel" skills together and a win breeds confidence in the squad that they can then take onto the league matches, obviously losing isnt so great, and yes there are risks for injury, cards, suspensions, but thats football, sometimes you have to take the risks to get the bigger rewards.

I'd completely forgotten about Carroll.
